Gaga vs Taylor Swift Marketing

Do you prefer Gaga's or Swift's marketing strategies when it comes to a new album roll out?

Gaga: will spill more easily on interviews, doesn't usually take social media breaks, more likely to post random selfies etc, uses website heavily for teasing, less planned posts/communications, no tour posts

Swift: more secrecy, posts and appearances are carefully planned, each interaction is planned, extensive use of easter eggs (Gaga to some extent too), frequent tour posts

My personal opinion: though I'm a Little Monster at heart and loved the MAYHEM roll out (the best in years for Gaga), I think TS really excels on the marketing side

Gaga’s marketing strategy up until Mayhem was absolute ****. And even with Mayhem only the first 3-4 months were well executed and planned. Everything post Copacabana has been lukewarm at best from a strategic marketing pov.

Taylor is more calculated but I personally have not paid attention to what happens once the album drop. My main issue with all pop stars is that once the album drops they forget about it. No one takes the time to do world building and really land the era besides its lead single.

Well whatever Taylor’s doing is working because her albums always seem to debut better than anyone else in the music industry.

yes I know she has gone off the deep end with variants- but regardless- it seems stanning Taylor swift is so rewarding and fulfilling and fun.  She is constantly feeding her fans and they are loving it. They’re never complaining like us Gaga fans are, so clearly Taylor is doing something right because her fans always seem happy and gagged

on the other hand- many of us Gaga Stan’s seem constantly frustrated, disappointed, and our expectations are rarely ever exceeded- when it comes to how her albums and singles are promoted

Taylor has the best marketing strategy for the current era.

Her focus on easter eggs and deliberately leaving breadcrumbs throughout what she does is the perfect approach to the social media and streaming eras. It guarantees continuous activity on social media which cements her content as part of the algorithims which drives consumption of her music. Consumption she's profited off by borrowing the Kpop industry's homework (fomo tactics, aggressive merch production, collect em all variants - all we're missing is a Taylor light stick).

To a lesser extent, its why we're suddenly seeing 2 specific rock bands do very well. Sleep Token & Ghost are both masked bands with "lore" and worldbuilding that drives video content and discussion on social media. As a result, they are the first "new" rock bands in years to do well on the mainstream charts.

It's surprising that more people aren't doing it.

gaga, she feels less like a product and more like an artist

idgaf that it's not absolutely perfect "why isn't she posting tour photos? where's the single? why is she doing arenas? why isn't she making every sale possible?" yada yada yada

her team has some more alarming flaws, like abra missing a single cover, AI sloppy merch, lack of collector items but some y'all nit pick it to a point it sounds like you're on her payroll... at the end of the day, gaga is still hugely successful on a global scale, not everybody can say that

mother, what must i do?

I think Gaga's marketing is good in the general sense, it's less predatory, it's not abusive, it's more personal, but it's lacking in the singles department, like the idea that every single needs some crazy visuals and choreography should just vanish into the garbage, just release the damned singles to the radio.

Taylor's approach is what is sick in the music industry and in capitalism and I hope Gaga will never do it.

So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy

To this day, I can't believe Abra doesn't have a cover, like what the actual f*ck?

Her team will do an elaborate site but not release a cover for the single?

And 100% agree on the merch :( I keep seeing amazing fan-made merch that I wish was the real thing because it's a 1000x better

I feel like Taylor actually likes her fans.

A Gaga likes HAVING fans.

It's different.  :huntyga:

They're complaining about the album title. I haven't seen MANY complainers but there are a few.

Taylor likes her fan's money and how much they can buy from her album variants

Gaga likes some fans, only those who appreciate her art

Marketing in general 100% TS (other than excessive album variants as that feels cheap af)

I love Gaga to death but taking advantage of full marketing oppurtunities often did not feel like Gagas teams strong suit, tho it has improved in Mayhem era to a degree

But of course labels are involved also so who knows what goes on behind the scenes

I think they are two different to compare.

Taylor's marketing is focused on exploring her fanbase's fear of missing out and parasociality. Taylor's success is mostly due to her fans feeling Taylor is just like them, as if she wasn't a gorgeous billionaire celebrity. They relate to her, they think she could be a girl from their friendgroup.

It still annoys me that DWAS had a physical album but Disease didn't.

there's a video game i love that literally pays fans for their cosmetic creations by giving them a cut of the profits per sale, it really encourages the community to create and praise each other as well as creating incentive to spend money on the game knowing you're paying an independent artist

I don't understand how gaga's team isn't seeing a huge opportunity to embrace fan art in the same way and give them a 20-40% cut of the sales, especially since part of her brand has been "if you work hard, you can do anything, art will never die" etc

mother, what must i do?
