In recent years (and for the longest part of the decade really), there have been multiple discussion about a new administrative-territorial organization of Romania, so I think it's only natural for the geopolitical elders of GGD to be informed about it. :ororomunroe:

I am going to present some proposals and highlight what they want to accomplish. However, neither of them are on track to be implement: they are more like ideas thrown into ether, taking into account geography or historical lines. There is high possibily the current divisions will be kept so, at the current stage, these are mental exercises.

Spoiler

For reference, map of Romania's present counties:

Rom%C3%A2nia_Jude%C5%A3e.jpg

1) Variant 1:

rofeat.jpg

- unifies already existing counties into larger counties of 2-6, but also subdivides the already existing counties into subcounties centred on importat towns;

- accomplishes a certain degree of descentralization, Bucharest is merged with 5 other counties creating a mega-metropolis following the course of the Danube; relatively little consideration to historical provinces, as seen by Vrancea-Galati-Braila merger that combines counties from Moldova and Muntenia, or the Valcea-Arges merger, which combines counties from Muntenia and Oltenia.

2) Variant 2:

Rom%C3%A2nia_admi_proiect.png

- units centered more on historical/geographical areas; as shown by the proposal using historical provinces' names (Moldova, Muntenia, Oltenia) or names based on geographical features (Somesana, Muresana, Dunarea de Jos); relatively large units;

- this proposal gives a special statut to Bucharest but doesn't merge with with other counties apart from Ilfov.

3) Variant 3:

Romania_-_PPMT_proposed_regions.svg

- proposal of the Hungarian ethnic party, envisions 3 standalone mega-metropolises (Bucharest-the capital, Braila-Galati on the Danube, Brasov- Transylvanian city with autonomous history but with relatively small population today); organizes the regions and subregions into 3 macroregions following the lines of the 3 Romanian Principalities: Transylvania, Wallachia, Moldova.

- creates a Szekelyland province likely with autonomous status which could be controversial and/or deemed unconstitutional.

Variant 4:

romania-judete-2009-ok2.jpg

- proposal using macroregions, regions, counties, subcounties, is not based on already existing administrative borders and territories frankensteined.mp3 from various existing counties, the subregions within the counties have no correspondent into the present day and little common identity.

- it gives consideration to historical provinces and geographical features like the river basins.

Variant 5:

60495598.jpg

- merges already existing counties, gives virtually no consideration to the historical borders between provinces, mountain peaks are not used as borders, but sometimes form the core of the new regions, only Bucharest+Ilfov kept unmerged while the other counties are combined.

- it proposes oddly elongated counties whose shape can be attributed to following mountains (Region 9- Eastern Carpathians), rivers (Region 10- Prut, Region 3- Danube, Region 12-Danube) or nothing al all (Region 11, which combines mountanous areas, the metropolitan outskirts of Bucharest, low plains and the Danube Delta).

Variant 6:

62344799.jpg

- more or less cohesive with the existing statistical regions, it proposes large territorial units created by the merger of current counties, relatively high consideration given to historical provinces's borders, but also geographical features;

- its regions require merger of varrying numbers of counties (2-5).

They should care so they would know which subdivision Bran and Peles Castles will be in. :abra: When I travel I always give attention to the names of the local units.

That's not correct, though. Romania is the capital of Italy.

I voted for the second variant because a region should contain several major cities; otherwise, it would simply be a metropolis and hinterland, with little dynamism within the region and there should be competition within, ideally between cities of the same size and league. Bucharest, as a metropolis with a high population and GDP, should be its own urban region, as in variant 2, so that the urban-rural divide doesn't dissatisfy people in the neighboring province. Given the expected population decline, the second option also seems to be the most promising for the future.
