Louvre Museum Shuts Down, Blames Over Tourism

I mean yeah, the Louvre is a mess. Anyone could've told you so. If you ask me (nobody did), the building isn't even fit for purpose anymore. It'd make more sense to rehouse most of the art in a purpose-built museum a little further out of Paris-Centre and keep the Louvre building as a museum showcasing its history as a palace.

Sadly, fewer people probably want to hear about the lives of the Kings of France than want to see the Mona Lisa, so whilst the building would still be celebrated, it wouldn't be so badly overcrowded.

This could be a good approach.

And in the meantime reduce the daily cap further. Sure, they'd miss out on the extra revenue, but I imagine if they increase the ticket price slightly to offset that change (the benefit for visitors is a reduced crowd) that could help.

Or introduce dynamic pricing during peak hours and dates. Sure, visitors might bemoan the increased prices, but if it benefits the maintenance of the Louvre and its contents, and overall food traffic is reduce I'd argue it's for the best.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi location has expensive tickets and is almost always empty. They have the opposite problem.

Barcelona begs to differ tho

here’s the difference, when you’re protesting for companies internal issues it’s fine and it’s right to do so.
But then you see what’s happening in Barcelona, the atmosphere seems different as most people are out there chanting things like “go home” and other similar stuff which lead the thoughts for a social/political agenda which is not the ideal.

Issues in regards to AirBnB and housing are clearly simply because of money and those should be addressed to governments and city leaders, it doesn’t make sense to take the blame purely on tourists when they’re mostly responsible on helping local economies if anything.

People tend to get things twisted easily just for convenience and given the current world situation on that matter, everything gets way more sensitive. We can’t just address such specific issues and take them politically just for the sake of individual preferences so that way we can still fight for our right conscious and most importantly without relying on biases just for convenience.

Tourism aint helping us in Spain, thank you.

Another story to fuel the sudden anti-tourism propaganda that's been happening lately...

I support it. I live in a town that has been both blessed and decimated by tourism. It can quickly turn into an irreversible curse

It isn’t that easy. My city has been fighting this for years and it never gets better, because demand continues to rise and people continue to pay more money. Their willingness and ability to do so displaces people from their homes. It prevents us from freely accessing resources and locations bc everything is paid now. The tourists are overcrowding us, their ships and planes harming our environment, their loud and disrespectful ways ruining our peace and quiet. It’s too much, and it’s not just the government. It’s the people themselves. And when the governments won’t listen and continue to allow mass tourism at the expense of their people, then yes, we will start yelling at people to go home and protect what little we have left.

I really understand and I support whatever movements in regards of bringing peace and necessary quality life. I just struggle to understand the methodology when the real issue is way bigger and deeper than what it seems and that’s why is not that easy.

This is not just a Spain issue, it’s the whole world, just think about it in the bigger picture. The whole planet is crowded, every big tourism target cities are also crowded.
We all come from the same species. Everybody that has common sense and empathy and also the portion who doesn’t give a flying for anything is part of the same, we are living in the same world.
So when it comes to the politicians AND rich people who are also the same, we tend to, if anything, separate classes because they’re are on a higher position and we are down here subjected to their laws which includes skyrocketing prices, the ability to allow more planes, ships, attractions and people bad manners and etc all because of money. They’ll never care about what working class is suffering from all of it’s consequences and it’s been forever like that.

So the issue here is the way we keep fighting each other down here and that’s exactly what they want to maintain their power. Again, I understand that it’s not easy, I’m part of the working class as well and trust me, I suffer every single day because of other people lack of sense. Just think that if it’s been like that for years and still things only gets worse so the “protests strategies” seems not to be working to get the problem solved then?

That makes me think that a real union isn’t still really happening, it’s just like little battles between us that will only put us against each other and will lead us nowhere at the end of the day. And that will never change until the day we actually take the power and stop allowing politicians and rich class to rule our lives.

So your mentality is "its always been like that so we wont change it"?

Hell no, the battles we're fighting are not against tourists, but massive and irresponsible tourism.

I live in an island that is only 2.000km², with a ~900k population. Yet this past year tourists visits reached 18M. The whole of the UK is 243.000 km² and they got 40M.

Can you imagine how such a small island will suffer from 18M people? They keep destroying our nature, our cities and our island and trust me I wont sit down and watch, even if that bothers regular class working people. Maybe they should ask and try to understand why we are protesting.

Once again, as I said I’m not against the protests. And I’m also not saying to stay like that but if things are not working by the same strategies over the years then maybe new approaches and strategies have to be considered.
But then again, the issues are bigger than what it seems to be, I hope you understand that some day

There has not been any protest as big as the recent ones in the past years. This movement is only getting bigger and stronger and we will be heard.

Maybe that's a good thing for some time because tourists usually go to Louvre and do not visit the many other big museums that Paris has who are kindai n the shadows of Louvre all the time. The 7th biggest museum in Paris is still hosting more rare and greater collections than the average biggest museum of a  typical city with 500 000 inhabitants.

That must be Teneriffe.

YOUR nature,  YOUR island? :max:

Tenerife is a stolen island. It is historically African, geographically African. The Spanish slaughtered the Guanches and took possession of the island, populated it with Spaniards, and never returned it.

The islands have a climate that's unique in the world, and there should be no restrictions on access so that all of humanity can theoretically enjoy them. Since space is limited not all of humanity will, there are advantages and disadvantages that arise from mass tourism. Some people know it's crowded and avoid flying there because of it, while others are fine with it. It's the individual traveler's decision.

Wikipedia also clearly shows that Tenerife's population has increased by 400% over the last 100 years because tourism has created new job opportunities for the population and attracted new people from elsewhere, while in Spain as a whole, the population has "only" increased by 130%. The majority of the Canarian population are now "tourism-related descendants"  and even back then, everything is relative, it qualified for mass tourism. The majority of the local people are equally part of the masstourism-system, and if they blame it, they will have to blame themselves and their ancestors, too.

And, by the way, the local Canarians themselves are destroying the global environment more than the average foreign tourists do. There's a lot of island hopping, with local Tenerife residents often flying to Lanzarote or Gran Canaria and other Canarian Islands to visit friends or for some service offered on the other islands, and they often fly back and forth to continental Spain and sometimes Latin America. They are mini Katy Perrys. Local residents of the Canary Islands frequently utilize air travel to navigate between the islands and to visit the Spanish mainland. This is facilitated by the frequent daily flights offered by airlines like Binter Canarias and Canaryfly. The short flight times, often under an hour, make island hopping relatively easy.

"After the commencement of the Spanish conquest of the Canaries, starting in the early 15th century, many natives were outright killed by the Spanish or died of exposure to new pathogens during the social disruption.[2][3][1] Eventually, any remaining survivors were assimilated into the new Spanish population and associated culture.[4] Elements of their original culture survive within Canarian customs and traditions, such as Silbo (the whistled language of La Gomera Island), as well as some lexicon of Canarian Spanish. Some scholars have classified the destruction of the Guanche people and culture as an example of colonial genocide.[2]"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guanches

"Historian and specialist in genocide studies Mohamed Adhikari published an article in 2017 analysing the settler colonial history of the Canary Islands as a case of genocide,[39] saying that the Canary Islands were the scene of "Europe's first overseas settler colonial genocide," and that the mass killing and enslavement of natives, along with forced deportation, sexual violence and confiscation of land and children constituted an attempt to "destroy in whole" the Guanche people.[40][38] The tactics used in the Canary Islands in the 15th century served as a model for the Iberian colonisation of the Americas."
