Considering the fact he was the head of the Catholic Church, he was fairly progressive, and in some ways, revolutionary because of that. We can only hope that the next pope follows in his footsteps; however, I don’t think that’ll be the case. The world is becoming more conservative now and the Church isn’t exempt from that. I agree, his papacy is undoubtedly the most progressive in history. Of course he was bound by the traditions of an ancient institution, but his legacy will be remembered for caring for the marginalized and poor; loosing conservative attitudes around divorce; standing for the immigrants; strongly condemning wars and environmental destruction; approving blessings for LGBTQ+ Catholics couples, to name a few of his doing.
