It sounds like "The Cure", it sounds like "Earthquake", it sounds like many other hyper feminine songs she has released in the past. I would even say songs like "Paparazzi" and "Hair", are on a similar vein too; just fun cute songs for the girlies 

Exactly. How much of her unreleased has this EXACT sound to it? Almost every era has a song like HBDYWM and it’s actually nice to hear it get a proper release for once instead of just laying around YouTube for years

someone else said it but the sound isn’t unique to Taylor swift nor is Taylor’s subject matter. When she does this sound it’s about as broadly and generically pop as she gets. Idk how you could say “it clearly references Taylor swift” bc she said she’s a good girl. I love a musicologist but I think that’s a case of being a little too in your field and not seeing the more obvious context outside it which is that Gaga’s been on this sound (mostly in unreleased form) since those ‘07 fame demos. It’s giving “had a hypothesis and searched for clues to justify it”

I think it sounds less 80’s than most of the album.

Especially the songs right before and after. LoveDrug and Don’t Call Tonight sound like they could almost be straight from the 80’s.

HBDUWM sounds like it’s from 2014, with about as much 80’s influence as Blank Space.

I do like HBDUWM though. It’s not a top favorite but it’s definitely still near the middle.

its hard to word but imo it sounds like a faux 80s song from the early mid 2010s, like its clearly "inspired" but I wouldn't believe u if u said it was released on the 5th of September 1987

Well one of them 3 was a lady, so not fully mansplaining  OT YES Gaga has flirted with this sound a lot and also before Taylor, but it is also very sus that it is directly referencing 3 of Taylor's songs and it would be insanely accidental if there was no intention for that. On the podcast they play the songs side by side and you cannot unhear that. And I mean... everyone and their mom says it sounds like a Taylor's song. I live in delusion that this song is a tribute to Taylor's sound, you live in a delusion that it has nothing to do with it. I am sure gaga knew exactly what she was doing and how and why it sounds like it does. I think the truth might be somewhere in the middle.

It s her most generic released song. I could see any artist out there performing this song. I guess it's fine, but it's nowhere near the quality of many other Gaga songs. 

The closest from the past to it was The Cure, but The Cure at least had a Gaga touch to it and overall is a great song. HBDYWM is as if she did a cover and yes we know very well of which artist, it is undeniable! 

We can say the sound originates in 80s and bring more copium and trying to defend something, but certain artists just own a certain sound today and it is what it is.
