I was thinking of buying a new car and NOT American of course (they are cheaply made and bad cars).

Most reliable cars are Japanese (Toyota, Honda).

If you buy it soon you should be okay.

I love my Subaru.

Yikes. Glad I bought a new Honda in 2023.

The midterms are really gonna be a bloodbath for the GOP at this rate.

he is so xenophobic, that he just wants to punish anything or anyone that he deems foreign, even tho most ppl buy foreign made cars in the US, since american cars are the fckn worst in the world.

its crazy cuz his xenophobic rhetoric is so reminiscent of hitler, yet ppl arent scared cuz he isnt putting people in gas chambers, YET. but knowing his base, they would be fine putting anyone thats not white into gas chambers.

One thing I have no doubt about.. is that nobody is going to build cars in America. Nobody. The standards of production & work there are SO low, you'd massacre your brand.

You’re giving American voters way too much credit. The average Americans doesn’t even know what a tariff is, much less know the intricacies of our supply chains.

But regardless of all that, no, people did not vote for him to bring back manufacturing. They voted for him because they fooled themselves into believing the simplistic promise that he would bring down the cost of living aka consumer prices. He’s doing the opposite. His policies will impoverish a generation and, in the end, who exactly benefits from this? Not the American consumer. Not the American worker (the GOP is actively anti-union and trying to lower wages and no doubt his anti-education policies are intended to turn Americans into low wage and low skill workers who can be exploited for more profits). The only ones who will benefit are the oligarchs who will have the power to take ownership of these industries.

I'm not saying it's a good idea, but if you look at the data, most trump voters approve of the tariffs, and it's getting clearer and clearer what tariffs really mean I think. I'm curious to see what happens to these numbers as we go on. I follow some local landlords and stuff on facebook to keep tabs on what the local bourgeoisie thinks and they're all saying they support the idea and are willing to pay to keep stuff in America. It's a thing. idk.

Its an idea that has proven time and time again in history to hurt productivity an efficiency as you loose lucrative exports your competitive in (due to retalatory tarrifs and increased labor competition from shielded sectors) and you replace that with domestic manufacturing your not competitive in and need artificially higher prices to compete in (by raising prices of imports)

Tarrifs do work over time in restoring some domestic manufacturing even tho its not a net gain to economy overall. I guess thats why some people still support the theory

That said, I think the net loss to USA will be more modest than tarrifs would be in most economies due to its sheer size. Its large enough to still be dynamic and industries have some competition between themselves (if sectors arent monopolized).

The sheer size also means many companies want access to the market even if conditions arent ideal or super competitive so more companies may choose to reshore production than they would in most other economies

Even so, I believe this will still be a net negative for economy just like it was after WW2

This has Elon written all over it

Its super disappointing that we have billionaires impacting most of the lives of US citizens in order to get more rich. Elon should NOT have the influence he has. I feel like that has to be some kind of conflict of interest

He hit out at companies that have opened facilities in Canada and Mexico in recent decades, at what he said were the expense of U.S. workers.

These lies about my Country irritate me so much :saladga:

Yes we sell cars parts and some cars to the US but Canada buys just as much auto content from the US as it sells which means on a net basis were not robbing any jobs.

If we destroy the supply chains and we Country becomes just fully self reliant the net changes to number of auto jobs wont change much on either side of the border, it will only make cars more expensive because the supply chain will be less dynamic and efficient and shielded from competition. :saladga:

Edit: By the way, even though Canada is the 10th largest economy and only top 30 or top 40 by population, we are the 5th largest consumer of cars (i think in terms of dollar value not total cars by quantity because some poor countries buy a lot of really cheao cars) which I only learned recently. I guess because our city designs and culture dont encourage public transportation usage so unless ur dirt poor and you have no choice but to bus, every family has multiple cars

Its a major auto market the US will shut it self off from

I have to wonder though, does it even make sense for car manufacturers to go back to the US at this point? Moving the entire operation from Mexico or Canada to the US isn’t cheap at all, and it requires a large amount of capital, which car manufacturers don’t have at the moment due to stocks going down. It also means paying MUCH higher labour costs than say in Mexico. And once in the US, they will have to use only american steel and american made parts, which is also more expensive. Not to mention the time it would take to move operations from one country to another.

If I was GM or Ford, I’d probably stay in Mexico or Canada and simply pay the tariff. And we know what that means for the final consumer.
