Can someone tell me why American Dad has not suffered writing wise but Family Guy has literally become one of the worst shows I’ve ever seen in the last handful of seasons?

American Dad is more character driven and the characters gained depth from their one dimension conception. Plus Roger allows them a character that slots into whatever role and plot they want to tell without it ever coming off as too outlandish.

Family Guy was always more of a sketch comedy cartoon with the Griffins as a framing device for the cutaway gags. Unfortunately they also were all fairly average character wise besides Stevie and Brian. So the plots as time has gone on have required them to stretch them into places that are exceedingly out of character.  Also pop culture changes far more rapidly now than it did when Family Guy started - so relying on it for jokes means episodes are often dated before they even come out.
