Hungary's parliament passes law banning LGBTQ+ pride events

A new law pushed through parliament bans pride events, the latest in a series of steps that removes rights for LGBTQ+ people. Opposition lawmakers set off smoke bombs in the chamber in protest.

Hungary's parliament passed a law on Tuesday banning LGBTQ+ pride events, including the famous Budapest Pride march that attracts thousands of people every year.

The new legislation was put forward only a day earlier and the measure was pushed through parliament in an accelerated procedure thanks to the ruling coalition's supermajority that allows it to amend the constitution.

The legislation, passed in 136-27 vote, is supported by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's party Fidesz and their minority coalition partner, the Christian Democrats.

The step represents the latest rollback of rights and protections for LGBTQ+ people in the country by the Viktor Orban government.

Orban's government has passed other similar laws, including the contentious "child protection law" in 2021 that bans gay people from featuring in school education materials or TV shows aimed at people under the age of 18.

Tuesday's law keeps with the government's view that tthe annual Pride march could be considered an event harming children, and that this outweighs the right to assemble.

Attending a prohibited event will carry fines up to 200,000 Hungarian forints ($550, €500), which the state must forward to "child protection," according to the text of the law.

Authorities may also use facial recognition tools to identify individuals attending a prohibited event.

Budapest Pride organizers slammed the bill after it was first submitted Monday.

"It’s nothing more than political theater — the ruling party is using the LGBTQ community for its own gain. But we refuse to be anyone’s scapegoat," the organizers said in a statement.

"While more and more people are starving in Hungary, the Prime Minister’s priority is to ban human rights protests," the statement added. 

Hungary has frequently led the EU in inflation in recent years as a cost of living crisis has gripped the country. Orban, who has been in power since 2010, has been criticized for democratic backsliding. Hungary is scheduled for elections in 2026.

I struggle with that because a big part of the population in Hungary doesn't supports this, and cutting the country out of the EU could lead to further radicalism, that could hurt the LGBTQ+ community even more. 

What should be done is limit their voting rights and influence within the EU, and we are already doing that.

That really frustrates me. The EU has values and policies that all member states are supposed to follow, so why are we still allowing these countries to remain in the Union when they’re not complying? On top of that, they’re pro-Russia and have supported Putin from the start. Hopefully, sanctions and funding cuts from the EU are coming their way—let’s see how long it takes for them to reverse course.

I consider myself a big supporter Of EU and I Cling towards European federation when thinking about the future Of EU, bit with heavy heart I see Hungary ( Orban )  as a problem and factor Of destabilisation

The ban on Pride first began in Turkey 9 years ago, after hundreds of thousands attended Istanbul Pride in 2015. That time seemed like the peak of gay acceptance in the country. Now, being LGBT in Turkey is the hardest it's been in decades. Hungarians gays should see us as a warning and do anything possible to stop this progression. Orban is taking notes from Erdogan and Putin.

So sad… but not surprising.  

At this point, Hungary is clearly out of step with EU values, having systematically restricted LGBTQ+ rights in recent years and continuously obstructing aid to Ukraine. So it only makes sense for the EU to take stronger measures to push for real change before allowing Hungary to continue as a full EU member.
