Gaga did what Katy couldn't (1432 mini-review? Kinda?)

Let's be real now. There's not even reason to compare them besides the competition of Roar and Applause more than a decade ago.

Katy has never been on Gaga's level. Katy is a mediocre pop singer like many before her and that's it. Gaga is an Artist with capital A, and she would be one even if she had never become famous. She lives and breathes art.

Gaga can sing & write lyrics and music. And that's the key difference. 

Gaga is a lover of music, with a deep well of inspiration she regularly pulls from that diversifies her output.

I'm sure Katy can name inspirations, but its beyond clear she's pulling from a very narrow pool of Top 40 music from a specific era.

Every MPG who has stayed the course (Beyoncé, Madonna, Kylie, Gaga) all are able to delve deep into a large pool of musical influences. Katy just doesn't have that for me.

People say it’s bad because she hasn’t evolved and it’s completely false.

143 is a huge evolution. Just not in the right direction. 

She used to make pop music that was commercial. 143 sounds more like free music for commercials, which is a huge difference.

Its not about lacking inspiration, its about the diversity of the inspiration.

Katy's never going to produce a pop song influenced by Nine Inch Nails, Siouxie Sioux or The Cure. 

Katy's always referencing her own previous peak, or referencing other very similar genres to her older work (like her covering Whitney a lot atm). 

And that's why I feel Katy's never going to be able to "reheat her nachos" in a way that feels fresh or exciting. She's always going to do the expected.

"Don't let growing up get you down" encompasses who I believe she is as an artist. Silly, playful, light, some fun in an otherwise dark work. She should do more of that. Be the fun aunt society needs.

I'm glad someone else said it because I also think WONDER is easily the best song on 143 and the fact Katy didn't go that same direction for the whole album is insane, I really hope she can channel some more of that feeling on her next album

I disagree with most of your horrible Katy criticism

the only objective reason to dislike Katy’s new album is cause Dr Luke produced it and that’s the very ironic thing cause Cirkut produced a lot on Mayhem and you know who Cirkut is?
 

The producer of TEENAGE DREAM  if only Katy would have worked with anyone except Dr Luke the snow ball wouldn’t have started

Hahaha, same. Almost broke my hip running to defend Chromatica. It is my favorite album from Gaga and 143 has nothing on it. I would say 143 is incomparable to any Gagas albums. Maybe Harlequin, performance vise

Listening to 143 again rn, and no shade to Katy but the only song I actually like is Wonder (the one that Dr. Luke didn’t produce lol)

I don’t want to join any hate trains, but this album’s definitely not for me

Maybe a couple songs I would defend if it was in the context of a different album (like the chorus of Nirvana isn’t bad, and All The Love has some redeeming qualities) but the project as a whole feels so flat that even the highlights don’t fully pull me in

Well, from my perspective it's a perfect match  the "return to form" that feels like it missed its mark.

Just my opinion, obviously, but I've said from day one that Chromatica didn't pass the vibe check like every other album has. It just felt empty and devoid of the spirit Gaga put in every other project.

I don't wanna use her recent words against her 'cause I don't think it's entirely fair but I did feel vindicated when, in her NYT podcast interview, she said she wasn't feeling herself and probably wasn't making her best, most authentic music at the time.

That's what this album sounds like but for Katy. She was on a great trajectory imo. Witness was a step up from her other music that did really well commercially but did absolutely nothing for me other than fill the space and Smile was more personal and inspired even if it didn't perform well.

Just like Gaga's albums where Joanne was an inward look that didn't perform that well commercially but remains my favorite project of hers 'cause it tells such a good story from beginning to end  

Now the question is, can Katy grow the way Gaga has and make music that rings more honest? I don't know  but I hope she can.
