I feel like "dark pop" is such a buzzword, it's honestly kind of annoying. Listen, I love dark aesthetics and visuals. BTW (which has a lot of that) is still my favorite album of hers, but I think so many monsters have a limited understanding of what "dark" is. Half of MAYHEM still has dark elements (e.g., Disease, Abra, Perfect Celebrity, Killah, Zombieboy, The Beast), but because it's not this electro-grunge/industrial sound, people are automatically dismissive of it.

She's also not exclusively a "dark pop" artist. She's spent more time in her career not occupying that space (The Fame, ARTPOP, Joanne, Chromatica). And look, MAYHEM is darker than all those records I just mentioned, so what's the big deal if not every single track on the album isn't electro-grunge/industrial/techno? This is still a dark record, people just need to expand their idea of what "dark" means.

It kills me that she is one of the most multifaceted and genuinely talented capital-A Artists of the last 50 years and she's stuck with fans who have the most myopic taste in music

Speak for yourself, many of us don't think the same way as you do. If the album didn't please you, that’s okay. Go listen to something else. There's plenty of music out there.
