Teletubby 141,095
Christie's first auction of art made by artificial intelligence (AI) ended Wednesday with mixed results, providing scant clues as to the future of the new and controversial medium. Fourteen of the 34 lots put on the block during the 14-day online auction either received no qualifying bids or were sold for less than the minimum Christie's had estimated. Grimes created the tapestry Marie Antoinette After the Singularity with her brother Mac Boucher. Her tapestry was sold at auction on Wednesday for $25,200 (starting bid: $30k). The buyer, who secured a steal for the work that was previously estimated at $60,000, was not named. Christie's called the 34 lots "groundbreaking", but critics, including almost 6,500 artists who signed an open letter, said it set a dangerous precedent. "Your support of these models, and the people who use them, rewards and further incentivises AI companies' mass theft of human artists' work," they wrote. Grimes's brother, said his sister saw the row as an annoyance, while he thought it was an intriguing part of the process. Her brother said their tapestry was the result of Grimes musing about Marie Antoinette. In 2021, shortly after her first break up with Elon, she likened herself to the French noblewoman, saying she was a "symbol for inequality" — and Roko's basilisk. "The central image was really Grimes's," he said. "It's tethered to the whole concept of Roko's basilisk. It's effectively this: your relationship with a future powerful deity that could come back, and essentially put you on trial for your past. It's this thought experiment inside of the AI community that is relatively niche and weird, but it's something that she's been thinking about for a decade now, and dabbling in. "This is just a physical manifestation of the idea, blending her relationship with historical figures who are lamented, paired with this concept of a future God deity AI that is going to come back and try you for those sins." Grimes and her brother grew up in Vancouver, where their stepfather Ravi Sidhoo co-owned East India Carpets. He described his sister as “an artist with a capital A, beyond music”. “She can express and talk about things that other musicians weren’t willing to do,” he said. Mr Boucher said he and his sister hoped to continue working with tapestry.
