Gypsy Censored Version?

I've been meaning to perform this song (I sneak out to open mic nights) for a long time now, but I hate the use of the word Gypsy, and I've been trying to think of a two syllable substitute with the same stress pattern. It's weirdly difficult. I've tried nomad but that doesn't have the same ring to it. Can anyone help me out?

Girl if you censor that word you'll sound like the radio version of DENIAL IS A RIVER by Doechii

I'm confused about how this word is considered such a strong slur. Oxford dictionary has two definitions, one is referring to Romani speaking people who travel, and I know it was used as an insulting term for these people. But the second definition is "a nomadic or free-spirited person" which is exactly what the song is about. I'm curious to know if the travelling people actually have a problem with it being used or if the internet has just taken it and run with it. Because my whole life I've known the term to refer to nomadic/free spirited people. Maybe I'm just uneducated and there's some massive historical drama I don't know about but it doesn't feel that serious to me. Is it really as bad as words like f*g and the n-word? Like it needs to be totally blacklisted. Someone educate me

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

I'm pretty sure that meaning comes from racial stereotyping of the Romani (who are a oppressed and nomadic people), though I may be misinformed

I also feel uncomfortable saying im im im im im im a gypsy gypsy gypsy because, in fact, I am not Romani

So sing a different song. Any word you try to replace Gypsy with will probably sound stupid.

It's not a slur but it has some weird history. You've probably heard someone say they've been "gypped" when they're stolen from or ripped off. It's because the Romani people were considered to be shifty thieves and con artists. Romani people have worked to reclaim the words and kill the stereotypes that harm them. Gypsy as a term has come to represent the romanticized, nomadic and free spirited idea of who the Romani people were and are.

Afaik no actual Romani person considers gypsy to be a slur but plenty of white Americans spend their time telling other people online how offensive it is to "use the g-word".
