Mayhem instead of ARTPOP in 2013?

What if after born this way, mayhem was Gaga’s next album, instead of ARTPOP?

mayhem sounds like a natural progression of born this way, without sounding too much like BTW- but just solidifying her unique dark pop genre. It feels very polished and solid.

would disease and abracadabra have done well in 2013? Would it have done better than ARTPOP?

Pronounced like “Balenciaga” . Emphasis on the “Ga”

A Very Gaga Holida

Nah, Gaga had no chance to do better after Born This Way. She would’ve been called a flop no matter what she would’ve put out

It would not have been as succesful as it wouldn't have had the nostalgia ''comeback'' factor, plus she needed a timeframe to prove her vocal talent and abilities in the face of the public after the world moved on from her over-the-top persona in around 2013/2014. :enigma:

Somehow everything needed to happen the way it did, in order to see her true pop comeback.

ARTPOP did for Gaga what needed to be done. Not just visually and artistically, but also in terms of bad critics and hatred. Because of that, she spent time the next years cementing herself as an A-vocalist and convincing the GP what she was: a living legend. We got MAYHEM today bc of many reasons, but one of those would definitely be ARTPOP turning out the way it did.

That being said, I have the following theory: mother placed MAYHEM's universe substituting ARTPOP, like she re-imagined her entire career after the BTW era wanting to re-write her own story. I really think that's the central narrative of this album

PD: I write a lot... lmfao sorry y'all :brat:

People were saturated with her. Even more dark pop would have made people go ´show us something new already´

very difficult to theorise on this one…. like trying to think what if the internet came before electricity….

i feel like Mayhem is an accumulation and evolution of all the work over time and makes sense as a concept in 2025 for Gaga given the journey and previous bodies of work….

People were tired of the BTW-like sounds when Marry The Night was released, so maybe it wouldn't have worked.

I have the same feeling, like TF/TFM/BTW wasn’t enough to convince everyone that she already was a legend and so she did all the hard work that you wrote in the first paragraph. Her first three albums are her best, but she was too ahead of her time.

Now, she can just return to what she was doing till 2011, but with much more wisdom and maturity. She is rising above all that pressure and bullying.

I think MAYHEM couldn’t exist in 2013 simply because she wasn’t at the same state of mind she is today. In addition, MAYHEM wouldn’t have the same impact nor generate the same curiosity because the general public at that time didn’t see her as a real artist, just a superficial pop act. This began to change with BTW but there still were people who would say she didn’t really supported the gays, that all she wanted was their money.
