Morphine Prince 109,926 Posted February 3, 2025 Share Posted February 3, 2025 President Donald Trump on Monday agreed to pause the implementation of planned tariffs on imports from Canada for at least 30 days, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said. The pause was announced in a tweet by Trudeau hours after Trump and Mexico’s president said Trump would pause for one month planned tariffs on imports from Mexico. Trudeau in his tweet said, “I just had a good call with President Trump,” and suggested that the pause on tariffs was in response to Canada’s agreement to target the flow of the deadly opioid fentanyl across the border into the United States. The prime minister said Canada had made new commitments “to appoint a Fentanyl Czar,” among other measures. “Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together,” Trudeau wrote. It’s a show for Trump’s cult. He has just broken the relationship between US and Mexico and Canada. Don’t think this won’t have repercussions for the US in the future. That’s what they have done. Why meet Trump’s ego with more ego at the expense of exacerbating a cost of living crisis amongst the poor and middle class? Trump wins the impression he is a tough guy and Trudeau wins by not avoiding exuberant tariffs that would hurt the people of Canada. I know people are upset at a Trump “win” but this isn’t a strong win at all, this is a pile of nothing. What does this do to effectively keep fentanyl out of the US? Nothing. Are we against Trump’s unnecessarily clumsy and aggressive foreign diplomacy? If so an example of effective and strategic diplomacy against a seemingly irrational neighbour, as displayed by Trudeau, should be celebrated as the should-be standard. Or… do we just want to see people suffer for a gotcha moment? Effective negotiation and diplomacy is more than short term, petty “wins” and “losses” it’s about building cooperation, trust, relationships and alliances and advancing your strategic interests and objectives in both the short and long term. It’s in Canada’s best interest to avoid 25% tariffs with its largest trading partner and if it has to make some small concessions while negotiating with an aggressive neighbour then it’s in its best economic and security interests to do so. Trump hasn’t gained anything from his ****-swinging, he’s damaged US credibility and trust on the world stage and will inevitably erode US soft power as other countries collaborate more to minimise the impacts of an isolationist US. Some here are already saying we have to get serious about diversifying trade away from the US because it proves 2016 was not a fluke and a good chunck of Americans will support certain policies and that means we could be in trouble every time Republicans win from now on One obvious thing I can see coming, resistance to more pipelines east and west is already falling so that we dont have to sell just to the US... If that happens the cheap oil the US gets from Canada will end because there is a $12 to $15/barrel discount on average for Western Canada Select crude due to Canada having few selling options and having to accept discounted prices Thats an extra $20B to $30B on the trade deficit right there if the differentials evaporate Instead of $40B annually the US deficit would rise to $60B to $70B (tho thats still small compared to China and Mexico). Trump just wants to take credit for this like he does with everything else. And there are so many theories as to why these ****ing demons want to shock the market. This has taught the world that you simply can’t trust Trump, and they’d be silly to think this is the last time he’ll try something like this.
