Abracadabra's lyricism (what does it mean to you?)

- Abracadabra, morta-ooh-ga-ga

I create as I speak, death Gaga…

here she is manifesting the death of Gaga, because she wants amor (love) … in some ways the song is both the opposite and the same as Bad Romance, which is about accepting all the darkness deepest sick parts of yourself/someone and still finding a way to love. Here there is more conflict where it’s literally Dance or Death… she feels like she needs to choose and she’s conflicted, But it ends the resolution that neither, nor death or life, nor dark or light, it just ends ends in both existing and acceptance in a balance

many different interpretations of this video… for me the video is her turning up to gates of hell, and lady in red is to judging her of wether she’s good enough for paradise or bad enough for hell… there’s indecision and conflict but again there’s no winner in the battle, ‘the game of life’ it just ends with coexistence..

Note.. love and missed discussion like this, this is our community… not nonsense arguments on the when or the how she releases, or weird fighting….. but the message of the music and the art …. Long live monsters

The whole thing sounds like a spell. The ultimate magic pop elixir. Supercalifragi... you know the rest... It spins and dance in your head.

Like a poem said by a lady in red
You hear the last few words of your life
With a haunting dance, now you're both in a trance
It's time to cast your spell on the night

The lady in red send me shivers while the black witch blows my burnt heart ashes to the moon. Pure slay of the sweetest dark dream...

A recall of the gothic style centerprint at the end of a mission in Quake...

Late to the party but I got a diamond heart

Not only, it's also an apocope for the Italian Amore (as in the famous Dante's line Amor, ch'a nullo amato amar perdona). But again, I don't know what Gaga meant to say there: if she thinks that's Latin, she's wrong:sweat:

As a linguist I’m drooling over your explanations :ladyhaha:

Isn’t Abracadabra of uncertain etymology? It could mean both “I create as I speak” and “Disappear like this word” if we consider this or that origin for the word. I’d like to imagine both are valid at the same time in the song:

”I create as I speak, amor ooh na na Disappear like this word, morta ooh ga ga”

It gives me the vibe of her creating Gaga back in the day. And mixed with the video it’s almost like she’s watching herself become the ultimate version of herself.

It’s very Suspiria vibes

omg great topic, I created a narrative in my head and it's probably way off but wtv :gum:

The lady in red is the same character from the disease MV, she IS the mayhem and Stefani is trying to wrestle control of that part of her.

I think this album is the journey she took to finally be comfortable in her own shoes and finally be able to control her own "mayhem".

And I agree with the op in the sense that I think she's really trying to leave behind a part of herself she doesn't want anymore, or better yet, she maybe doesn't need it anymore... I think the lines "Abracadabra, amor-oo-na-na" and "Abracadabra, morta-ooh-ga-ga" sells that theory.

The start of the mv starting with the lady in red saying "The Category is Dance or Die" is also very interesting, it shows that side of Gaga is ruthless.

Idk, it's too much to process. :bradley:

The dance or die bit sort of feels like when her label and old management (and to some degree the fans) wanted her to basically be a dancing monkey and just make pop music and look pretty that’s basically what it gives me.

That or in the narrative of the videos this character seems to be almost training and trying to tame these different versions of Gaga. I wonder if in the next video/single (probably Vanish Into You) we’ll see the conclusion of the story

I will say that the lyrics encourage embracing uncertainty and surrendering to forces that can both enchant and destroy us.

That's def also a good explanation, remember when the walls started closing in when she stopped dancing on the disease MV? I feel like that also represents much of the same you pointed out.

And I get the same training feeling, it some moments the red lady seems annoyed, but at some other moments she almost looks scared, almost like she's afraid of what's happening. This video has lots to unpack.. :bradley: And I feel like there will be a continuation because we are already piecing together something with disease + abra, we need a conclusion now, I need to see Mayhem fate :enigma:

The song is about unknowingly selling her soul to the Illuminati one night after meeting a witch in a red raincoat.   :lolly:

I CREATE AS I SPEAK :cryga: I take back EVERYTHING I said about this title being dumb 'cause that is probably THE most Gaga thing ever. Speaking her own reality.

she also sings abra ca[pause] dabra abra-ooh-na-na, so she separates the abracadabra and stressing the "as I speak" and then immediately goes "in her tongue she said", as "in my tongue I speak"

Come on and wrap that blade of grass around my hairy ass

Amor and Morta is definitely Portuguese, we write and say it just like that. Morta we say it like "estou Morta" - 'Im dead"
