It's a great work for someone who doesn't speak Italian, but be careful with the commentary, which can be a little suffocating if you try to read it all. My best advice, which usually students agree with, is to choose some famous canti and start reading and digesting those (e.g. Inf. I-III; V; XXVI...) before trying to read all the poem, as it's hard for native speakers as well.
