But what makes that kind of community only possible through TikTok? If we're talking about content inspiring users to healthier ways of living, that can be done through YouTube, articles, social media posts too. YouTube actually generates higher quality content because it doesn't promote bite-size clips that chip away at context and development.

What makes the short videos so much more effective than a five to eight-minute video?

Ultimately, we want citizens to be independent thinkers and I find YouTube more conducive to that aim than TikTok.

My problem with TikTok is that in the interest of maximising engagement, it would rather sacrifice the alternative of adding real value to your life and your mind.

This is so wrong actually. On TikTok, you can upload videos up to +20 minutes (and yes, they can go viral). But what does Youtube Shorts do instead? No videos up to +1 minute. Go to the comments section and the death internet theory is true. It's all dated brainrot content or TikTok reuploads cut because of the 1 minute maximum thing. And I know you're reffering to normal Youtube, but there's no point to make a comparison at all.

Well you kind of answered your own question there. Tik Tok is the bestthing to maximize engagement, at a cost. If Tik Tok reaches just one more closeted boy's life that's worth it to me. YouTube is going to require you to search for something for it to pick up on somebody being gay. Tik Tok can algorithmically pick it up without you ever searching it. Which is creepy, but EVERYBODY does it. Hell, Target does it. Everyone just hides it and serves it as an ad. 

 

Of course I'd like there to be critical thinking and for attention spans to stay in tact. But banning Tik Tok isn't really going to help that in a world where notifications, billboards, driving, etc exist. That kind of change is fostered through parenting and habit building in children. That's child rearing, not censorship. The answer isn't to ban and censor something else, it's to promote things. Tik Tok isn't being banned for shortening attention spans, it's being banned for it's potential to be informative. The government wants people dumb.

Yet we had Nyan Cat, Snoop Dog, YTPH, and more brainrot content. And why are you blaming TikTok for eroding kids attention span?

First of all, TikTok is for 13+ users, that means no kids; if there are kids, it's their parents fault for letting them install social media or not control what they do on the digital world.

Second of all, childrens attention span have become shorter and shorter since social media exists, that means Youtube, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, ALL OF THEM, did their part too. 

So instead of blaming an app that was (and still is) used to make dances, funny videos for all generations, informative videos, etc., you should think that all social media apps have their "TikTok" side (Reels for example) and viralized even more this type of short videos.

It's also not the apps fault. It's the method of consumption. 

And the method of consumption is the "ipad Kids" generation. That's not come about because these apps exist, it's come about because industry & government have made it increasingly harder for even the most switched on and active parents to be able to raise children properly. 

And then with teenagers - in the last decade alone, western governments and business have completely destroyed so much of what was working perfectly in the youth sector. And created generations of young people who's parents were told its dangerous to let them go outside meaning the only socialisation they got was online. 

We've literally paved paradise and put a parking lot.

The legislation actually explicitly gives the president the power to issue a 90 day moratorium on the ban to give TikTok more time to find a domestic buyer.
