The ability to grant that extension was written to be only conditionally available if tangible progress towards a divestment/sale was happening. TikTok has done nothing of the sort because they tried to fight it in court.

Probably applies, given that he seems to be promising to help negotiate the divestment

Seeing people fall for the most obvious stunt in history is hilarious.

This country is full of idiots.

But to be clear: The ban was always bad and nobody should be getting credit for halting it, especially not the man who started it all.

The entire government was on board with the ban.

Thinking about all that taxpayer money wasted on this farce, how much right-wing propaganda is coming to Tik Tok, and how many Americans will actually begin to like Trump because of this.

Wow!!! I heard picking up a book or two, educating yourself about psychology & mental health and building interpersonal - not parasocial - relationships can have similar effects! Completely changed my life! It's crazy, more people should try this!

This is the most disgusting **** I have read here

Suggesting better solutions to help people navigate their lives without being absurdly dependent on social media - even if done so in a non-offensive, tongue-in-cheek kind of way - should SO be the 2025 energy, babe.

Talking down to someone is not "non-offensive" or "tongue-in-cheek". And won't encourage anyone to seek out better and healthier solutions x

What is the legal precedent?? Trump didn’t want TikTok and wanted it banned

then he changes his mind

And then the app went away for 16 hours

the app comes back “thanks to president trumps efforts”

sorry idgaf abt TikTok or it’s praise for president trump . Trying to make him look like a saving grace .

Nothing got taken away from anyone

no one’s freedom of expression was removed. TikTok is not the only platform someone can express themselves from. They thought the app was a threat cause of China and then trump decided to “fix” that and now he is being made to look like some big hero

so idk what ur yelling abt . This whole thing is orchestrated . Theatre. A big joke

and now going forward this app is gonna be all pro trump propaganda.

so I will keep saying it- I’d rather the app be gone . Idgaf

The legal precedent is that unless the law that forces the divestment of TikTok is overturned, which even if the app isn’t banned seems unlikely to happen, the US government has given itself the power to ban apps on the basis of “national security” concerns without having to provide meaningful evidence, which is a flagrant violation of the first amendment and lends itself pretty substantially to governmental abuse and overreach. If you wanna give the government the power to unilaterally silence people based on literally nothing, a power freely given to Trump by Democrats and Republicans alike, then have at it.

To your point about the potential of the app becoming a vehicle for pro Trump propaganda, through banning the app and giving him a mechanism to save the app in that legislation, the Democrats provided Trump an opportunity to compromise the app and he took it, which should be a surprise to literally no one; however, now they’ve also provided him the opportunity to threaten to ban other apps that have foreign ties if he doesn’t like the kinds of things that are being said on those platforms. It’s a lose-lose at this point and the whole thing could’ve been avoided if Congress didn’t allow META and their lobbyists to buy them off and pass this authoritarian legislation to begin with.

The legal precedent is the SCOTUS decision on Friday.

That now foreign owned businesses can now be forced to sell to Americans or abandon the US market whenever the gov claims (without proving) national security risks.

The Republicans will 100% use this to go after all foreign owned tech companies now. Tencent literally got designated a "Chinese military company" 2 weeks ago, so did multiple other companies including CATL (a EV battery & renewable energy storage battery maker).

It's legalised corporate warfare.

It’s appalling watching corporations and billionaires bend the knee to trump and his theatrics. It’s even worse seeing how forgetful people are of Trump and what he has done.

It's not my fault you read it in an offensive way instead of the humorous way it was intended to be read in. That's why I made sure to tell you that it wasn't meant to be offensive, but you found it easier to completely ignore that, it seems. And I can't make people seek out better or healthier solutions anyway, all I do is share what's on my mind because I sometimes have an opinion on sth - the people in question still have to connect the dots themselves.

We can just agree to disagree on this matter and that's fine. We also don't have to take offense in everything that strangers say on the internet. If I'd indulge in more typically online behavior, I would now get all defensive and personal over being put in a corner because of a harmless thing I wrote, but see: all these are things I learnt not to care about because they happen online, and the majority of important things going on in my life are happening offline. So yeah, everyone still crying over TikTok or whatever should seriously give that a try.  x
