Stephen King announced on his Bluesky profile that he will not be voting for the Oscars this year due to the L.A. fires. He also believes the Oscars ceremony should be canceled amid the devastation in Los Angeles. The show remains set for Sunday, March 2 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

“Not voting in the Oscars this year. IMHO they should cancel them,” King wrote on Bluesky. “No glitz with Los Angeles on fire.”

In the wake of the L.A. fires, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences decided to extend the Oscars voting period and delay the nominations announcement until Thursday, Jan. 22. The nominations were originally going to be announced on Jan. 17.

Cancelling the awards is self-centred. What about all of the proud nominees who have no association with LA whatsoever?

Ridiculously unfair to all the nominees who worked so hard. Imagine being a first-time nominee and having it cancelled. As if the fires weren't bad enough to deal with why would you want to make life worse by cancelling it?

I’d understand if they were set to happen in the next two weeks but it’s in march.

My God lol. They didn’t cancel the Oscars during COVID and that was a world devastation.

Yes the fires are a tragedy but the best they can do with this is bring awareness like the Grammys which are going to focus on that, the concert, donations, etc. “The Show Must Go On”. It’s not like the Critics Choice that they were supposed to be during these days. It’s still a month and a half away.

After Covid, these kinda of requests somehow became acceptable to say, especially from wealthy, old/retired privileged people who have nothing to lose and have reached their peaks. Its ok to cancel stuff whenever they want.

The Oscars may be a place where privileged people come together, but it’s also a ceremony where less known or rising actors, directors, makeup artists, musicians, VFX artists etc get awarded and recognized for their success. I’d get it if the ceremony were now, but it’s in March. This is just virtue signaling and reeks privilege.

As someone born in and still living in CA I’ve witnessed so many horrible fires over the years, and I don’t understand why everything needs to stop because of this. If anything people want a distraction, and that’s exactly what entertainment is for tbh. I have so much empathy for people who have had to evacuate and have lost their homes, but I’m sure they are indifferent to whether or not the Oscar’s occur.

Cancelling an event that’s 6 weeks away and could provide the city some relief really sounds top priority, thank you Stephen.

This. LA born and raised here and, I dunno. There have been so many fires, I know this one is probably one of the worst but a lot of us here in LA are like… life goes on. It’s unfortunate but everything being cancelled is extreme, especially this far out.

Exactly. I think covid set this precedent that it’s insensitive for life to continue amidst major world events, but there is always going to be tragedies happening all over the world. This one just so happens to impact LA, but if anything the Oscars can be used as a way to fundraise for those who have lost everything.

Thank you. You made the point I was about to edit in my original post about fundraising. This event can be used in so many ways to bring awareness and help those affected.

Exactly. California has seen worse fires. I don’t mean to compare, these fires will most likely become one of the most destructive fires in CA history. I feel for all those affected by these fires and all the destruction these fires have caused, but it’s garnering so much attention because it’s in a highly populated and wealthy area on top of numerous celebrities losing their homes. Where was all this attention during the Butte County Fires, the Cedar Fire, the August Complex Fire, etc? And the way these fires are being politicized is just frustrating and irritating. All of a sudden the GOP and non-Californians are fire experts 🙄

I get that people aren’t trying to take too much attention from the fires and want to raise awareness and fundraise, but we’re allowed to live on and move on with life and have distractions. The Oscar’s can be used as a platform to do just that.
