crazygato 457
Like DWAS???🤔 Witnessing the unexpected and humongous success of DWAS, I was wondering of Gaga’s imperial phase and how “You And I”, her first officially released “ballad”, would have fared as a “buzz” single before starting the Born This Way era. Would people have liked it? Would it have been a huge success? Personally, Gaga was unstoppable in that era and if she had released it as a cute radio single for the holidays in 2010, it would have been extremely popular and would get people talking and holding their breath for what was to come. It would have showcased a different side to her during the time when she was dominating the pop music sphere. It would have been such a weird and unexpected moment, while still keeping the mystique and unpredictability. The BTW era is so fascinating to me, so many promises, so messy yet so perfect, and many “what ifs” surrounding it. Many things were planned and then unplanned / scrapped, unexpected fails/ successes, a great ball of titanic ambition which I love! I pick and question “You And I “ being a buzz single because I feel it doesn’t really fit in the BTW era rollout and would have fared better as unrelated to the era and rollout. IM NOT SAYING IT SHOULD BE KEPT OFF THE ALBUM, IT BELONGS THERE. If it had been a success it’s just no doubt it would have been on the album anyway, and Gaga was very passionate about it. Anyway, what are your thoughts? Would “You And I” have been her 2010/2011 DWAS??? Discuss!
Economy 47,674
This might be controversial i dunno but honestly i was never in love with You and I. I dont hate it but i dont love it Several ballads or power ballads I like more: - Ill Never Love Again (my fav actually) - Is that alright (one of my fav Gaga vocals) - Million Reasons - Hold My Hand (my wedding song btw) - Dope (unusual song but in a good way) You and I is an ok song but feels very Country vanilla to me. I cant get excited for it and Ive maybe listened to it only a couple times in the last 10 years tbh
artdoll 45,524
I think that if they chose to release You and I as a promo single before the era began, it probably would've done them a disservice? You and I doesn't really sound like anything else off of Born This Way. It fits well into the album, but, sonically it's in its own realm so to speak, if that makes sense? Releasing a soft-rock country influenced ballad as a promo single for an album that's mostly pop, edm, industrial and house probably would've been confusing to the GP and potentially the fans alike. At least, I think that people would've probably expected its sound [Born This Way] to be different and it could've put the era on a rocky path at first. I don't think it would've performed poorly, but having just dropped singles such as Bad Romance, Telephone & Alejandro...I don't know if it would've necessarily been a big hit either? It would've been stark in contrast to what people had already come to know and love (and expect?). It's interesting to think about though! 。゚☁ glued up, sometimes it's too much ☁ ゚。
FATCAT 59,123
It kind of was? She performed it a few times before it came out at the Monster Ball 2.0 I can't be free if my hands are tied... 🧟♀️👰🏻 1
A Very Gaga Holida 21,400
It would’ve went #1 on the Hot 100 for sure cause it was right after TFM and it would’ve been frontloaded like Born This Way was despite the very mixed reception, but I don’t think it would’ve stayed #1 for six weeks and I think it would’ve hurt the future singles and therefore the album itself. I think ARTPOP was (commercially) the right time to release a ballad as the lead single

Million Reasons would have had a better reception than Perfect Illusion (which shouldn't have been a single lol). I think Applause was the right choice for ARTPOP's lead & I think in the modern streaming era they'd have been able to respond to the love for Do What U Want after Swinefest more effectively (even with the scrapped MV).
RodeckDanny 2,239
imagine You and I being the lead single of Joanne? Where would it have peaked instead of PI? Listen to my debut pop single 'Want You Bad'! (link on Insta)

LeafBug 7,497
Scheiße was Gaga’s choice for single #4. Edited January 10 by LeafBug
bornthisway135 432
In a way, it was a buzz single. She played it throughout the Monster Ball Tour then added Born This Way once it was released. So were hyped long before Born This Way came out.
AnglerfishbraBENUS 5,647
it went number 1 on itunes on album release week didn’t it? it absolutely should have been a pre album single. it would have gone #1 from hype and radio etc. i’ve always thought this. 1
