Robbie Williams' song disqualified from Oscars over similarities with another tune

Robbie Williams song “Forbidden Road” from “Better Man,” shortlisted earlier this week for best original song, has been disqualified. The song, insiders report, “incorporates material from an existing song that was not written for the film” and so has been deemed ineligible for Oscar.

Academy rules state that the words and music of any song submitted for awards consideration must be “original and written specifically for the motion picture.”

The melody of “Forbidden Road” contains marked similarities to that of “I Got a Name,” the Charles Fox-Norman Gimbel song performed by Jim Croce in the 1973 film “The Last American Hero.” Coincidentally, Fox is one of three governors of the Academy’s music branch.

A letter went out to the 400-plus members of the music branch this morning. Reportedly the similarities just came to the attention of the branch executive committee this week, and the decision to drop the song came yesterday afternoon.

This means the original song shortlist will be trimmed to 14 titles from the previous 15.

still wondering how this one has been shortlisted if it was released after the deadline.

And how tf every James Bond song is eligible if all of them are using the James Bond theme in the song????

The James Bond theme just uses a minor major chord which isn’t trademarked or anything. It’s just associated with the franchise, but doesn’t count towards plagiarism or interpolation. Kind of like how you could say Jaws owns the minor 2nd interval which would disqualify any song using a repeated minor 2nd interval lol

Exactly! This year is very weak in this category... And Todd was dumb for not using the extended version of the song and securing that Oscar for his movie... It was right there and they wasted it

I have been so disenchanted with him ever since I learned he swindled a writer out of publishing for "Angels," which was written about a partner's miscarriage.

For me he stopped being relevant when he sided with QAnon regarding the Pizzagate conspiracy theory in 2020. The pandemic revealed so many people's ignorance and stupidity, I immediately lost every ounce of respect for those nutjobs.

I still wonder why everyone just pretended like he never said those things. :duck: Is it because his music is the epitome of basic and the GP cannot bear to live without all the blandness he offers, which is why they just pretend they didn't hear his problematic comments in the first place? Genuine question. :neyde:
