‘Mufasa’ earned $13.3M across Friday and previews, 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' - $25.75M

Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King grossed an estimated $13.3M domestically on Friday (from 4,100 locations), including Thursday previews.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 grossed an estimated $25.75M domestically on Friday (from 3,761 locations), including Thursday previews.

Paramount’s $122M production Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is heading into the Christmas frame with $70.5M opening, well ahead of Disney’s $200M prequel Mufasa which is nothing to sing “Hakuna matata” about with a $36M-$38M estimated opening. 
At a $36M-$38M level on Mufasa especially with its budget, sorry, Disney, but these are Joker: Folie a Deux numbers…  Disney, we can’t deny how far off Mufasa is here from Lion King ($191.7M) in its stateside opening — off -81%! source

Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 posted $6.5M last night in previews. That’s the official number from Paramount. Disney reports that Mufasa did $3.3M.

“Sonic the Hedgehog 3“ is expected to open to $60M while “Mufasa“ was originally forecasted to be north of $50M. Don’t know if “Mufasa“ will get there as its previews aren’t that far from Wonka ($3.5M) which did $39M and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse ($3.5M, and $35.4M).  
Mufasa carries a hefty budget north of $200 million, so Disney needs “Mufasa” to be the mane moviegoing event through the new year to justify that price tag.

The first “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie made $3 million in Thursday previews back in February 2020. Its sequel brought in $6.25 million in April 2022.

Disney’s “The Lion King” remake in July 2019 debuted with $23 million in previews.

Saw both last night. I grew up with both franchise. Great movies.

I like sonic more because it got more actions in it. It's just more exciting. And the post credits are super exciting. Everybody were cheering. Just one step away for "that" character now.

I have no idea about the success of the movie but those vids are so lame. I have been to empty rooms like that even for blockbusters. It all depends on the place and the time

pre-weekend projections for Mufasa was $180M worldwide, now it's $125M but it will probably be even lower
