The only progressive that has potential to be successful is Tim Walz. Even Bernie Sanders wont be able to do it as I dont think hes good at being a leader.

Yes they are. The vice president elect was saying the Springfield *legal* immigrants were a problem and he still considers them illegal. The administration has signaled a plan to denaturalize some 1st generation Americans.

And you're shifting to a different subject entirely instead of agreeing or refuting the fact of the Overton window right shift you said isn’t a thing but definitely is. Interesting.

This is my Hannah Montana™️ lipgloss.

It's not the centrist approach that loses for Democrats. It's the fact that they talk at instead of to their base. Y'all keep saying it has to be someone truly left wing, but that would have been Waltz in a way and he could not get her the blue wall. Policy is not an issue, PR is. Democrats lost sight of what is important, and it's so obvious. Where is the Democratic party in local government? I see so many positions go unopposed for Republicans, when Democrats need a grassroots campaign. This isn't rocket science to a pop culture forum. Democrats are Dua Lipa at the moment. Everyone knows her and casually listens once in a blue moon. There's a few stans. But a widespread national campaign strategy isn't gonna do much good because nobody relates to Dua Lipa. Dua Lipa lacks a core dedicated fanbase, and her past success is indicative of right place right time rather than we're here to support HER.

It is the centrist approach bc it is literally an ideology that says change almost nothing.

It is an ideology of fear and insecurity. Kamala had 0.1 seconds to stand out and she chose to barely do it to not offend the Biden moderates, and it cost her bc Americans are speedrunning starving and homelessness with their tanking wages the Dems failed to raise.

At this point Dems either need federally raise the min wage or start a UBI with the next Dem’s president name on it.

It’s policy, but also PR. Yes at wanting more spaces for Liberals in independent media but they’re just gonna flop like Khia if they just serve recycled CNN talking points. They need something catching to the working class they can talk about.

Tim Walz was a great pick, but Kamala’s team ran a campaign that didn’t reflect his best qualities. We need a Tim Walz dem as president and Biden’s spiteful aides ruined that for the world.

It's not a left shift if that was the plan since it was introduced though.

I'm sorry I should have clarified. Yes ACA lays the groundwork for universal healthcare and that was essentially the point of it. But it looks like they're looking to go down Medicare/Medicaid way by expanding the power of those two programs over time. ACA really acts as a patient's rights, but it is not single-payer healthcare the way it looks like they're hoping the other two will be.

Not really though. Your perspective is "change almost nothing" when the ideology really is "cement the rights we take for granted". We're acting like no good bills were introduced in 21/22 when really they were blocked by Republicans and Sinema. We've also had a rogue supreme court we as a country have never witnessed before and were not prepared for. You SHOULD be scared. We're in 2024, and Americans are still scared of foreigners and discussing rights that should have been settled 60 years ago.

.1% of people earn minimum hourly wage.  The median annual salary is $60,000. A higher minimum wage isn't going to sway many votes, whether you wish that were the truth or not. And running on that is going to shy away more people than it will attract. Because most people supporting a higher minimum wage will vote for a Democrat whether they run on that platform or not. And we're still trying to pitch socialist ideologies to the same generation that grew up during the red scare? One of the key demographics that Democrats severely lack is young men. Why? The loneliness epidemic. So how do we make men feel like they have a sense of belonging in a world where they realize women no longer need them? You make them feel the same way as women have felt the past generation. You expand availability and affordability for trade schools and college, showing them that they have a place and giving them access to avenues for success other than dead-ending them.

This a great thread, made up of a lot of intelligent posts from people with opposing viewpoints, and I've enjoyed reading it, but there's a big ol elephant in the room imo, so big in fact that nobody's ever seen an elephant this big before.

What is being discussed here is what do the Dems need to do to win : how far left should they lean, what specific policy positions do they need to take, who or what type of person do they need at the top of the ticket, all of this with a vew to winning enough votes to swing an election their way. But America has just elected a team of people (and it isn't just Trump, it's a team, just as it was a team for Biden, Obama, Bush, Clinton, all the way back) who will seek to make meaningful elections a thing of the past. They will work to rig elections so that their guy will win the Presidency regardless of how many votes each candidate actually gets, and similarly I'm sure they will try to rig it so that they always have majorities in the House and the Senate, and I'm also sure they would work to tighten the screw with each passing election cycle.

On the campaign trail Trump told a rally that they would only have to vote this time and after that they'd never have to vote again. Yeah ??

Trump also said that he would only be a dictator on day 1. What does that mean ? I think it means that plans exist and buttons are ready to be pushed, that he will fire everyone he needs to fire and replace them with people who are loyal to him rather than the law, and he might even have a bunch of emergency executive orders ready to be signed, and then the machine will be in place and ready to do its work.

If you think this is fanciful, bear in mind the following.

These guys have already openly tried to overturn an election which they lost. Now they are back, unrepentant, unreformed, but more experienced.

They have the Supreme Court in their pocket.

They have majorities in the House and the Senate.

Day 1 is still nearly two months away, so Trump hasn't been able to do anything yet, but he HAS made those cabinet nominations, Gaetz, Hegseth, Gabbard, Kennedy, and now Patel to the FBI. The appointments of any of those people would effectively be an attack on the institutions they would be leading. I know Gaetz has been forced out, and Bondi is at least qualified, but she is still a Trump loyalist first and foremost.

So how far left should the Dems position themselves ? Who should top the ticket ? AOC, Whitmer, Newsom, Walz, Shapiro ? I hope it continues to matter. It may not.

it's too soon for AOC I think.

First, she codes as VERY young and a lot of ppl wont take her seriously sadly

Second, the dems lost with two women nominees, they are not going to consider pushing another woman as their candidate for a long while (sadly).

Thirdly, I dont want AOC to waste her shot at running. It's guaranteed any woman who runs in 2028 will lose imo and the dems do indeed have a young man issue. They need a populist man for 2028 imo. AOC is only in her mid 30s...she has A LOT of time to build credentials and when she is in her mid 40s she can run and probably have a real shot at winning. Candidates usually only run once or twice if they fail once. I dont want her to waste her shot.

I think this is an astute observation. It isn’t that women can’t win it’s that Dems have a clear “young man” problem. Frankly, someone in the vein of Buttigieg is a good idea. I don’t like him at *all but if we’re just talking strategy. He was gaining momentum among the right people who eventually defected to the right this election. If he could actually stop pretending to be gay Obama and just do his own thing, he could work as he made a decent insertion in 2016. But then again it’s been almost a decade since. I think we need someone of a similar vein of ballsiness to make a bold run and the Dems gtfo of the way and let that person make the proper appeal. The GOP couldn’t stop Trump and look how that turned out. They got their best success since reagan

I could see AOC running for President, having a strong but limited success , then pulling out and being offered a high executive/White House/international relations position for that term by the democratic winner

Economy

TBH its what America needs to restore balance tbh

While some of her proposals like 70% tax rates (which in some states could go as high as 84% to 85% cuz of State added tax) seem a little overkill to me... shed never be able to pass legislation to go all the way anyway

Maybe a more balanced framework where the rich dont pay so little and the poor and middle class get so little

Project 2025 ain’t happening lol this has already been debunked by Trump himself and just fyi the Heritage foundation has been around for decades. It’s all fear mongering. Remember when the media and Biden were calling him Hitler and then Biden never looked happier inviting him to the Whitehouse? it’s alllll a play

The only reason why Trump "debunked" it was because it would make him lose some voters if he admitted early it was true. We are talking about someone who lies every time he opens his mouth.

He is hiring all the people that wrote Project 2025 in his cabinet and that's NOT without any reason. 2/3 of the 140 people who wrote it worked for Trump's administration. Trump's name appears 312 times in Project 2025. It's set to be put into action as soon as a conservative gets into the office.

And what did you want Biden to do when he received Trump at the White House? Insult him in front of cameras? :laughga:

Oh and by the way I truly wish that what you're saying could be true but nobody gets 140 people to write a 900 pages text just for fun to scare people during elections.

i watch a lot of independent conservative influencers and things and no one is concerned about it being real because they don’t. Libs sort of don’t realize there’s a completely different other side of this whole thing. Trump genuinely wants to be a good president for everyone as much as Kamala did. You have to get past the media and the stories they tell. it’s only half the story. Once again i say this as someone who voted Kamala. I would like at least one person to entertain the idea that we have it all wrong over here. Watch one Amala Ekpunobi video
