What a strong soldier. Charli feels the same way - and I do, too, as an artist. Suspension of disbelief can only go so far for me with the idea of “something so strong words alone aren’t enough and so you must sing.” I HATE the way musical songs are written. If I have to do a musical - give me a jukebox musical like Mamma Mia. Music on its own is inherently something so strong words alone aren’t enough. So I love a musical where music serves the artistry of music itself, rather than it being a tool to tell a story. Music and the art of its composition is already a story and it doesn’t need to be shoved into a literal space. There’s this weird lack of abstraction I guess. The way music abstracts reality actually makes it more compelling because life IS abstract. So, to me, musicals feel very corny and on-the-nose. 2 1
