Just wanna point out that I agree with you and I wasn't clear in my comment, I only wish death to 2 people on this planet, they both were presidents and did too much harm. Bolsonaro said "I am not a gravedigger" to COVID victims families during the pandemic when people asked him to do something. I'm at peace wishing he would be dead, but I can't wish that for the people who voted for him, that's another story.

Most of America are idiots. They vote for the economy first and foremost and remember their pockets were deeper when they were getting those stimulus checks.

I don't think the Dems were complacent. 

One of the biggest issues highlighted in the exit poll is this - the economy. 

A lot of voters feel worse off than they did 4 years ago. Inflation has killed so many incumbents in the last 12 months of elections across the planet. 
And they've broken for the opposition because electorates do the same thing every time they feel worse off than the last election, they vote for "change" by changing the party in power.
