I think it could've if they really went for it though. If the musical sequences were made into a spectacle with a ton of visual pazzazz, I don't think people would've minded it. Joker and Harley are campy characters, so it definitely could've worked. The problem is that it felt half-assed.

I don’t think this would’ve worked either, people know Joker as a comic book villain and many people complained about the original Joker for not following source material. Marvel set a standard of following source material and DC/WB constantly ignored it.

So unless Gaga was an over sexualised bimbo in tight clothes who was obsessed with Joker to the Nth degree there was no way her portrayal was gonna be received well by the core fan base of the film. Not to mention the fact it’s a musical which most heterosexual people (men more specifically) don’t like because of the camp and queer connections to it.

I think she should stick to dramas and keep out of superhero related properties, unless she wants to only do superhero properties for the foreseeable that is.

It’s dumb for me to want to reply to a post on a public forum? Lmao. Go write in your diary if you don’t want responses. You lack the intellectual capacity to understand what the film was trying to say and the risk it took. It won’t affect Gaga in the long run. Unlike you and other award and accolade obsessed “fans” if she isn’t nominated I wouldn’t care either way. Facts remain her performance was mostly praised in reviews and people wanted more of her. She had the #1 song and movie for a period of time and remains iconic. The fact you need to write and embarassing diatribe on the failure of the movie and the possible impact on the trajectory of her career shows you should probably lay off the internet and get some air MAMO.

:bye:

There you go yapping again without any comprehension. Did you even read my initial post? Because it seems the person here lacking any intellectual capacity is quite literally yourself. I have to laugh!

First of all, just to clarify I totally understood the message of the film and I do applaud it for how risk-taking it was. I loved the concept of Arthur vs The Joker.  However the execution overall for me didn’t fully work and clearly I’m not the only one who thinkso.

Some musical elements felt off and misplaced and the lack of depth of the character Lee was also a major issue for me. I actually didn’t hate the film funnily enough (I’d give it 3 stars) but I just thought it lacked finesse. But hey, that’s just my opinion!

Unlike you, I’m not biased and have to eat up every project Gaga puts out. I love her but I don’t love Joker and that’s ok. And as for the trajectory of her career, she’s already an icon and a legend. She doesn’t have to prove anything. All I was saying is that I hope she chooses better projects going forward…is that suddenly a sin? Oh and another correction: you're the one who brought up the awards conversation, not me.

Also FYI: I don't have a problem with anyone replying to my posts as long as we keep it cute and respectful which I can't say is the case for you. I regret even making the effort to reply back to you in the first place given how rude and insulating your tone is.

It doesn’t matter if it’s a public forum or not. Learn some manners.

Anyways…great idea! Fresh air sounds perfect for escaping the unwarranted opinions of keyboard warriors like you.

That bitch coulda had a revenue of three dollars and a warm starburst from Joaquin's coat pocket and I'd still be fawning over it

You literally stated being rude with your shady ass comments. So if you can’t take it, don’t deal it. You don’t even know what you’re saying at this point. Imagine acting this bent out of shape and hyperbolic because your fav had a flop movie.  It’s giving unhinged.

Oh honey, what we're NOT going to do is rewrite history.

You’re the one who's got a problem here, decided to label my initial post as "dumb" and then had the nerve to say I lacked any intellectual capacity because apparently I didn't "get" the film. The gaslighting is REAL.

I personally would never throw or call names on the internet because someone else had a different view/opinion to me. It’s not even that serious which is what I find most hilarious. However since you came in with that negative behaviour, I just matched your energy. Please go re-read your response and maybe you’ll take some accountability.

Anyway have a...nice life and I sincerely hope to never engage with you on this platform again!

the film was cuute, i love how the harlee character is having a sequel with the record too. she's having a third dimension when she decides to sing "the joker is me".

i liked the shutter island-esque plot twist, why there is so much weird music. and the psychology is kinda interesting. We can still wonder if she's real.

But if she is, i love to think the reason the Joker is a perv with Harley is because she made him back to Joker mode forever. and the idea that Harley is the real Joker, like she low-key is more clever than him so she could have always controled him (in anime and all). (i know i'm wandering but wtv a woman can be a super hero or a villain too)

but what about the scene where someone gives him the joker smile ? ain't seen it :(

Side note: isn’t this the first time in YEARS that The Haus wasn’t involved in one of Gaga’s projects? And Sarah even “liked” shady comments about JFAD? What if her whole team advised her against this film and is why they didn’t work for her for this project? Gagagagaga

What do you mean, Sarah and Freddie did her hair and makeup for the movie. :poot: and I’m sure Bobby was involved in securing her the role too. The post Sarah liked seemed more shady towards Todd Philips not Gaga.

I don't understand what you would want her to say?

I mean yes the movie is flopping but It's only that the budget was super high. 165M is not really that bad is it?

At least it's not like Megalopolis which has only made 10M :laughga:

In a parallel timeline, the movie would have been a massive success, both critically and commercially. Following on from the success of Die With A Smile, these unifying projects, which put Gaga in a positive light with the general public, would have been the perfect launch pad for LG7's lead single…

Sadly, the timeline which we are in turned out very differently. :( The whole Joker era is a complete disaster, with a single positive note: despite not performing (at all) commercially, the album Harlequin has been met with positive reviews. That‘s it.

Harlequin deserves a grammy. It’s her best body of work.

Oop I swear I read somewhere that neither Sarah nor Freddy were involved in the movie, and also not involved in Harlequin :franminervini:

This is bad, of course it is, but I'm still desperately trying to see the positives. No, it won't even break even but all I'm asking is that it out-earns the biggest comic book adaption bombs. Here's a list of them and how much they made and if Gaga has cleared them or not, please let me know if there's any I'm missing out:

Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom - $434.4 million (no chance, but could be worse)

Black Adam - $393.5 million (no chance, to land just under would be sweet but unlikely)

The Flash - $271.3 million (very unlikely to beat but crazier things have happened)

Green Lantern - $220 million (unlikely to beat but we can but hope)

The Marvels - $206.1 million (coming close, needs another $40.4 million to beat it)

Birds Of Prey - $205.5 million (coming close, needs another $39.7 million to beat it)

Morbius - $167.5 million (almost cleared, only $1.7 million away from beating it)

Shazam! Fury Of The Gods - $134.1 million (CLEARED)

Blue Beetle - $130.8 million (CLEARED)

Madame Web - $100.5 million (CLEARED)

Jonah Hex - $11 million (CLEARED)

My hope is that the further it finishes up this list, the less the fanbase and various internet commentators will be able to feasibly laugh at it. There has been so much worse, the only thing bringing it down massively is its huge budget, so it's a bigger bomb than some of these movies even if it made more but you can't deny how powerful the sight of a box office score is, especially next to some of these.

The concept was doomed from the get. You guys don’t realize the majority of comic book fans are misogynistic or incels who hate women and are always complaining about how woke Hollywood is. Singing in the movie was never going to work commercially.

I get this viewpoint but to say it's the majority of comic book fans really isn't accurate. Have you met the majority of them? Just because most of them are men doesn't mean they fit into one or both of these groups. Most comic book fans I've encountered are men aged 30+ with long-term girlfriends/wives and children and this is their nerdy past-time that they keep behind closed doors with their like minded buddies because people laugh at them being a grown man who's into action figures. They're fanboys who are sticklers for accuracy above all this. I say all this as a female feminist. As for the musical angle not working, I do agree with that somewhat but just because lots of people dislike musicals, not just sexist straight men.

All this talk of her picking better roles in the future, but I honestly don’t think she is being offered better roles. There would be more chatter in the trades with her name in the mix and while occasionally she is brought up, it’s never with any real substance or rumor behind it. I don’t see smaller directors/studios coming for big name A+ stars like her and bigger Oscar caliber directors have only claimed they would like to work with her someday but not that they have offered her a role or even seriously considered her for any. I still very much get the impression she is not fully taken seriously or respected as an actress. Based off the articles written since JFAD premier it doesn’t seem like Warner Bros or even Todd really respected her either to a certain degree. If they did they wouldn’t have made the comments about her not connecting with the male audience or improvising on set.

Regardless of what she thought or was promised from Todd, this was always going to be a supporting role to Joaquin. Warner Bros are who hold the ultimate blame in allowing Todd so much freedom. Todd is a pretentious asshole and comes off slightly misogynistic himself. He was never going to write a female character to the quality of Arthur Fleck but I did not expect it to be as bad as it was.

I do ponder this myself. Jane Campion, the director of The Power Of The Dog, which won the Oscar for best director (and was nominated for 12 awards, the most that night) apparently said she was surprised that Gaga missed out on a nomination that year for playing Patrizia, saying she was brilliant. That gave me hope that maybe she'd be booked on a future project with her but nothing yet. But you have to remember that movies take a long time to plan, cast, produce, direct and film. Some directors only direct a handful of films throughout their careers, so there's that. But I totally agree, some male directors are simply incapable of writing truly strong, interesting, multi dimensional female characters who are on the same level as male characters. It's unfortunate but just the way it is.

From what I saw of the earliest reception to Gaga being announced was that fans were fine with it and weren't bothered by her singing in it and possibly being a musical as long as it was dark themed. If Gaga had never done acting before and was an unknown quantity, they might have felt differently.

As for disliking musicals, speaking as a straight person here, it's a myth that so many of us don't like them (most women, I've found, love them) with a dislike rooted in homophobia. Theatre being openly associated with LGBT is a very new development. As someone who doesn't hate musicals but has a very small amount that I do like, most of the dislike is down to 3 things. We like singing, but not with acting. Someone talking and then randomly bursting into song never happens in real life and would be very irritating if it did. Secondly, many of us feel that the songs don't help the storyline along and just make an already long story even longer. And thirdly, a lot of songs from musicals aren't that good (just an opinion). Musical songs have a distinct sound to them that sound as if the same person wrote them all, it's an element very difficult to pin down but they don't sound like regular music from artists on the charts. If you like this sound, you're in heaven, but for most of us, we're thinking: "This one song is good but I couldn't sit through an entire show." My personal hell would be Wicked. Those songs hit a part of the eardrum that makes me want to quit and they're so painfully American and modern. I actually do like Defying Gravity but my mum has to leave the room whenever that song comes on as she simply can't take the piercing high notes. She's the same with Let It Go, as many people are.
