I wouldnโt call that abysmalย As @TortureMeOnReplayย said, there should've been ~$100 million for marketing since the production budget was ~$200 million. And considering this was supposed to be one of WB's biggest films of the year, you'd expect them to go harder for the marketing. But even then, the marketing we got wasn't great. The trailers and TV spots were good, but aside from those things, as well as billboards and magazine covers (which are all pretty standard atp), WB did nothing special for Joker 2. One of the executives for WB even said "Last year, we turned the world pink [in reference to Barbie]. This October, everyone will wear black and white," but that didn't happen.
nATAH 49,327
theatre to home releases are much shorter now but it's clear WB realised it was dead on arrival once the narrative became "this movie is bad" mother, what must i do?
Lucas 26,990
This is sad though. Let's hope her next movie will have better reception, and also let's hope this won't affect Lg7...

Right the marketing strategy for this film was beyond all over the place. And I'm sure it can definitely be considered sloppy and abysmal given what was ultimately marketed didn't match up to what was actually released. timdrake 1,001
I donโt think so. They can market it all they want, in whatever ways they want, but at the end of they day, itโs just a bad product.ย
Nick34 10
Since the merge to Warner Bros Discovery, the company has been a mess with weird sudden cancellations of titles to get tax profits. And lots of titles are not Max exclusives to be more profitable.ย But since Covid itโs not that weird to put movies earlier to streaming (on demand). For example in Holland, looking at the box office numbers the amount of sold tickets of last week is only 1/3 of the opening weekend. And looking at the top 10 of 2024, it probably wonโt even come close to a top10 spot. (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice isnโt such a box office hit either, haha)ย

Coming out of that festival, the reviews were already mixed, and I think they saw the writing on the wall for Joker 2, which is why they didn't promote it as much. I mean, the marketing for the movie was abysmal, but that's probably because they knew the movie wasn't going to do well and decided not to market it as much. It also dropped 82% this week and the opening weekend was already low, so there's no point in trying to beat a dead horse. I feel like they want to push the physical release so soon because they just want to get this movie done and over with. ย I knew we were in trouble when I saw that press conference in Venice where Joaquin commented on Gaga's weight and she acted so curt and awkward. I said oh boy something has gone wrong here.
StrawberryBlond 14,862
Movies are being released on DVD earlier and earlier these days. I remember Barbie had only just completed its cinema run and it was already being advertised to stream. Its been the way for quite a while to combat piracy. It remember when it used to take what felt like half a year for a movie to come out on VHS back in the day and even when we switched to DVD, it still took a long time. People couldn't be bothered waiting and got pirate copies. The industry cottoned on and started releasing earlier and its done wonders. I don't hear of anyone buying pirate DVDs anymore. In fact, the only people who buy them at all are diehard fans. I haven't bought one in years. Most people now stream movies, they don't buy them.ย What I am surprised by is that it isn't an extended cut version. The fans are crying out for that. "Gaga was under-used" is one of the biggest complaints so if there's more footage of her, for God's sake, use it at this crucial time. It seems everyone involved in this movie is being stubborn because it flopped and believe that the public don't deserve anything more because they didn't make it a success. This movie is one wasted opportunity after another.
