It’s absolutely wild to me that they cut so many of the scenes featured in the early leaks and teasers that generated the majority of the hype and set the tone for what the public was expecting from the movie 🪦

I'm positive in the future there's gonna be a wave of people revisiting the movie when it comes out on streaming/video and there will be think-pieces on how misunderstood the film was on first release. And some of yall flops are gonna pretend you always knew the gold we were given.

The movie is the opposite of fan service. It's not dessert; it's the pile of vegetables on the plate and the children are whining.

This is my Hannah Montana™️ lipgloss.

i kinda liked it idk lol i also felt like Gaga was there most of the time. the only scene missing from the trailer was her dancing while pregnant which could have been cut for obvious reasons. we shouldn’t have expected any scenes we didn’t see in the trailer anyway

Got to see it just now, I'm not into the whole DC, Marvel, comics thing so I'm not sure what I was even getting myself into. But I'm actually very confused with what the movie was about. I don't know what Gagas role was meant to be? She was barely there? Mainly was on screen to just sing.

Also, I do think the some of the music scenes were a little long, it didn't overly bother me but I kept seeing people at the theater almost huff around.

I just watched it. I liked the movie and loved Gaga’s acting in it but all the talk about her not being in it are true. She’s in the background a lot. Also way too drawn out as a courtroom drama only for it to go no where. I don’t see her getting an Oscar nom for this or the movie getting any recognition. Total bust of a movie.

Gaga is great. The film looks fantastic; cinematography, production design, etc... all great.

Something must've happened during editing, I don't know who's to blame, but the film we got was honestly not good, like at all...

Spoiler

the script jumps around in the weirdest ways, Lee has virtually no character arc and is just kinda there?! There was no development to their relationship and deepening as to WHY Lee loved Joker. I don't understand what the overall point of the film was? I'm not sure if the film even knows either.

The musical numbers are best when they're fully fledged fantasy sequences, the vocal choices & inconsistencies between their "real" voices and their "fantasy" voices was sooo confusing to me.

the ending was so rushed, the last scene with Gaga at the stop absolutely should've been what was cut. Such a missed opportunity. SOOO disappointing.

I'm so excited for Gaga to be THE LEAD in the next film she does with an actually skilled director.

Do you think it will be helpful that I avoided every single bit of promo I could?? Like I have no expectations and won't be let down when things are cut. But people are still saying the movie isn't that great so idk :fatcat:  I really hoping I genuinely like it. Going to see it tomorrow

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

Just got home from seeing it and OMG did I see a different movie than the one everyone is complaining about??

I fully walked into this film feeling ready to be disappointed and the bar was on the ground, like I was actually not even looking forward to going because of how bad everyone was making it out to be.

Anyways within the first 20 min my friends and I kept looking at each other and saying how good it was already, and I literally spent the entire film waiting for it to "get bad". It never once was, and I LOVED it. I already knew the acting, cinematography and music would be great, that was a given. However, I enjoyed the storyline a lot as well, and thought it was poignant and extremely relevant to society today relating to our prison system, lack of rehab and mental health services, affects of childhood trauma etc. These themes in itself were presented very clearly and are important to be discussed, and it is great to see any film be open to these challenging topics.

I loved Gaga's Lee, and thought she had a strong prescence throughout the entire film, whether she was actively in a scene or not. I won't give spoilers, but so many of Arthur's actions / thoughts revolve around her and the impact she has on him. While she didn't have as many "Oscar bait scenes" as I guess people wanted, she portrayed what I think truly is her best acting to date. She disappeared in this role wayyyy more than I think she has with others, and every time she was on screen I was captivated.

Of course the film wasn't perfect, and there are some things that could've been better and some complaints I do agree with. Some of the musical scenes could've been 1 min shorter, I wish Gaga had more dialogue, and I am irritated by movies in general showing scenes in their promo that are cut from the film.

Additionally, this film truly isn't made for any one audience, so I see how it can be loved or disliked strictly based on your expectations going into it. Yes, typical comic book fans may not enjoy the theatrical aspects, and Gaga fans watching it strictly for her and no other reason will obviously want to see her in as many scenes as possible. I happen to be the exact person this film was made for I guess, a massive Gaga Stan that also happens to love the first Joker film, and enjoys a good courtroom drama (12 Angry Men is a classic film I would 100% check out btw).

I can't wait to see it again, it certainly requires several watches to truly digest. All I can say to sum this up is that I am so happy that I was proven wrong going into this. It truly is a one of a kind film, and while it isn't for everyone, it in no way deserves the hate it is getting.

Yesss @Siena

So I ended up going to see a very late night showing of Joker 2 with my bf....neither one of us are huge comic book film fans. He simply figured it would be a good film to see as he had seen the original, and I was basically there for Gaga. Be warned...both of us were a bit drunk as he doesn't work on Friday and I don't teach on Fridays....

These are my very early morning thoughts on the film & Gaga:

The editing is terrible. Even my bf—who is not a film twitter type of person—noted the editing. I suspect the screenplay must have been good to draw in Gaga and Joaquin, but the finished product has a lot of weird plot holes. So either the editing f*cked up a good screenplay, or it sucked from the start.

The film itself is....decent but sort of boring. And I believe that's the worst part—whatever complaints I have about Gucci, the film itself was generally entertaining even if it dragged on a bit much. Joker 2, however, was dull for large swaths of the run time.

While we were walking out of the theater, I heard some teenage boys complaining about Gaga, but then one of them said it "she was good, not her fault the film sucked" and then they all kind of went "well, okay, you have a point." I suspect twitter will be brutal towards Gaga (and little monsters might make it worse by fighting with them), but film twitter hates Todd Phillips and Joaquin enough that they won't blame her. Not sure how the industry outlets will react....it could be framed as "not even Gaga could save x or y" or a dig at Gaga not being a box office draw, but even then I feel like it's so obvious that Todd was the main issue here that I can't imagine they won't blame him.

I definitely feel like you can see the difference between Ridley Scott and Todd here. The former has (somewhat) lost his mojo, but he is still a good enough director to make a somewhat decent film. The main issue was the tone in Gucci (as if Ridley directed them as if they were all acting in different films). Sure, it dragged, but it still had a coherent narrative.

Todd, on the other hand, seemed to take it personally that everyone accused him of ripping off Taxi Driver with the previous Joker, so he made some really strange choices imo as a sort of "f*ck you" to the critics (which backfired).

I still think the film is worth seeing if you have seen the first Joker. It's nice to see how the story wraps up. On the plus side, the acting is very good and the cinematography is beautiful. The advertising is very misleading and many shots in the trailer were not in the film—I suspect the studio/advertising team knew the film had issues so they started throwing Gaga everywhere in an attempt to recoup some of the box office.

I'm also starting to wonder if the timing for LG7 was related to the film, as if Gaga knew it might be received poorly. And I don't think it's that bad tbh. I'm kind of shocked at the 40%...I think it's like a 60% RT.

Low key they really, really screwed the advertising up.

I feel like the film was going to be received poorly no matter what (I have mixed feelings on it), but I suspect if the advertising hadn't been so misleading people might have not been quite as insane about it.

Exactly.
When a movie of this magnitude is so heavily criticized early on, it's clear that it's not about the quality of the material, it's about expectations. I'm sure in 2-3 years this movie will be called a benchmark and its scores will rise.
