Mr S 8,178
Oh that Madonna Stan retired? Also 7/10 is not really acclaim. It's just enough to hide any bias he has against Gaga without actually praising it much.
Phantomhive 1,951
The madonna stan who's usually on ga's neck probably couldn't be bothered with an album full of jazz music and showtunes so they let someone else review it. Watch them come back for lg7 In I fly on wings of winter.

monstertoronto 8,773
The Guardian review is so bafflingly ridiculous. It’s not a legitimate criticism to just dismiss a handful of classics just because they’ve been covered before, and it’s a huge failure of a music critic to miss the nuances and changes she incorporates to make these songs not just her own but also related to her fictional character! And the line about “we know you can sing and do jazz”. Yes she does, and it’s something she’ll continue to excel at not just something she released to prove a point once. It’s absurd it’s like he’s reviewing from the perspective of “this should have been a pop album so I’ll just drag it in spite of its obvious quality because it’s not the genre I prefer”. How does he have a job. 4

To me, sadly felt like I was always in search of a cumble of originality in the songs to justify this album. Huge no for me. Agreed. They don’t feel very inspired or important. I’ve kinda felt like her successive projects since C2C have been less and less interesting and I actually really like jazz. I just think she goes really really easy nostalgia on her choices and it’s just not all that exciting even if she sounds incredible. I don’t find her performances on these all that believable

But here's the thing - critics are discussing the artistic value of any release, or at least are supposed to. Fans absolutely can and should be happy enough that Gaga put an album out because she liked it and wanted to. Critics are naturally going to ask what does it add to her catalogue. And given its an album of covers that cover songs she's singing on a soundtrack out next week, I can understand why they're a little bit confused. And tbh I don't think Gaga needed to prove she can sing Jazz without Tony. She has solo Jazz songs on both C2C & L4S and had a very popular Jazz vegas residency. Her big band credentials already exist. Agreed. For the most part these covers are really not treading new ground or all that unique or new imo to justify them. They don’t even feel all that fun—just that they should be. Idk she sounds great but I think fans need to get a little real about Gaga’s jazz efforts. She sounds nice a lot of the time but she’s actively not treading new ground. She’s tracing steps very clearly laid out before her. If you listen to any of the current jazz music, you’ll very easily see she’s not pushing any boundaries or anything. That’s okay, she’s having fun but it’s not going to necessarily endear critics to her output whose literal jobs is reviewing and critiquing the art form she’s working in. That doesn’t mean they have it out for her lmao it means they expect a little more inventiveness than she’s providing 2

Take the worst shallow gays that thinks being negative is edgy because they have a "drag queen in the head" and let them write a review about jazz, soul and blues music. Girl this album is not challenging cmon hahahaha like at all. It’s fun and she sounds great but this not a remotely challenging album
