Its because independent voters and republicans do agree with progressive policies, but the Lefts extreme messaging makes them think of these policies are communism, anti white, or defunding the police.

I think it's more about the right's misinformation messaging rather than the left's "extreme" messaging.

Trump calls Harris a "communist Marxist" while she openly advocates for very sensible capitalist policies.

Also I'm not a huge fan of her pandering to the republicans like she has SO much lately. I mean its one thing to love being endorsed by some republicans but **** Chenney she LOVED his endorsment and these gun type comments and stuff? idk it feels uncomfrtable. I know she is doing it to win votes and I get it she has a strategic game she has to play but it's a bit of a turn off  The US really does not have a true viable center-left party

I feel like her commenting on guns rn is also in response to that transphobe who bought twotter, saying that someone should try to assassinate (… what a funny word) her. It also works towards her being perceived as a „strong woman“, stupid concept and stupid that there’s a need for it in 2024, but it is what it is I guess. The narrative had to come at some point during her campaign, but if she would have opened the entire candidacy with the „I’m a woman, but I’m also stroooong“ thing it would have felt stale by the time Election Day actually comes along. 
So, yet again, she and her team are very smart in their choices.
