Doechii is such a talent, so glad she was able to part ways with her label and speak her truth on this mixtape. There are definitely some bops on this project, but some powerful softer moments too. I love the way she blends poetic verses with straightforward ones, it truly feels like you're listening to the pages of her journal.

TBH if Gaga were to collaborate with a rapper, I'd want it to be Doechii – she's talented, LGBTQ, and knows how to serve a look/isn't afraid to get edgy/ugly with it. Part of me feels like Doechii timed her mixtape for before the Katy song to overshadow it a bit... I'm sure that collaboration was her label's decision.

But anyway! Stream Doechii! Brat Summer --> Alligator Bite Autumn

I don't think she parted ways with TDE? The mixtape is under TDE.

Agree on the collaboration part though. Doechii seems to be pretty unproblematic overall, and puts the art before any drama. She's a super talented lyricist, and a great performer with a lot of stage presence.

You're right! For some reason I thought since she was talking so publicly about her creative differences with the label, the mixtape was going to be published independently.

Regardless, you're right about her putting the art before the drama. She is a real artist, like this woman was born to write, to rap, to direct visuals, etc.

I feel like TDE is weird in the way that they're controlling of the sound that their artists put out, but also give a lot of creative freedom. And I feel like fans could tell she's been all over the place in regards to her sound, with some of it not seeming super authentic. Her fanbase is still largely the people that have been around since she was indie, so it makes sense TDE loosen the reins to let Doechii speak candidly. With the plan having been to put out her debut album this year, it would not surprise me if there was a deal in place to allow her to create swamp sessions for her mixtape and speak freely on it. For her to then have to turn around and work more closely with the label for her debut.

I hope that the mixtape does well. I was hoping she'd do around 26k but with a limited physical release and her relatively small Instagram following I'm not sure she will. Purely because I feel she deserves the success and because I feel like it'll afford her creative freedom. Either way I'm loving the Mixtape.

Totally, this is super insightful. For her to put out this grounded, honest project now before her major label debut is probably a super calculated move on TDE's part, even if untraditional. In the LG7 thread someone mentioned how perceived authenticity is selling more records right now than anything else... I could see the label reading questions about her sound and the lopsided single releases over the last 2 years online and loosening their grip to help Doechii gain back some traction.

Luckily enough for Doechii, even if her debut album doesn't feel quite as connected to who she is at the moment, she's so talented that her gifts shine through everything she puts out, even the most poppy, stream-driven tracks. I've been listening to her since before she was signed and think she has what it takes to go all the way, but could see her going indie like Megan or Bree after her more label-backed album. Who knows!

Glad to know another monster enjoys Doechii as much as I do <3

Doechii's mixtape debuts at #124 on the Billboard 200. Apparently it sold 11k units, which I think is decently good considering she had no physical copies counting towards her sales (thanks TDE).
