Emigrante 10,008
I’m just wondering about the thing of getting no minimum wage or sh1tty salary and just living off the tips. I get that you probably get much much more money in the end, but.. how does the pension system work in the US? Cause in my country, the more you get monthly on the paper, the more money as a pension you’ll get as older person. If you only live from the tips it’s not documented in any way or is it? I don’t know how that works exactly, but I was really often scr3wed with things like that by my employers. I worked full time and they only put 1/2 of that on the paper without even asking me, so they wouldn’t pay too much money for hiring me, which is sh1tty. Sugar, spice, and everything nice. Lextyr97 20,844
By all means raise minimum wage but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE come up with some way to stop companies from using this as an excuse to raise their prices!!!
Elohim 1,964
Lmao this is such a populistic statement, raising the minimum wage will not help a bit, because companies will raise their prices to pay this minimum wage raise. So it’s a cycle that will keep on going. but I guess, do whatever you gotta do for these extra votes

So social security, which is the closest thing we have to a pension system in the US, is collected from payroll tax (as opposed to income tax). Whether or not this bill would negatively effect social security depends on whether or not tips would also be exempt from payroll tax, as the exemption currently being discussed is income tax. I think the only part that’s specious is the tax-free tips. We have forgotten our public MANNERS

She’s proposed anti-price gouging legislation as well, so hopefully that’ll help curb the possibility of companies using wage-push inflation as an excuse for exorbitant price raises/gouging in response to minimum wage increase. Full tea. Especially when we’re looking a huge employers like McDonald’s/Amazon etc. These companies *absolutely* participate in wage theft and wouldn’t have to raise their prices to account for paying their workers a living wage, the highers up would just have to take a pay cut on their exorbitant, self-awarded annual raises lmao We have forgotten our public MANNERS

JoeCool 1,101
I don’t know enough about this tip plan to really comment on it. But my older self is more jaded when I hear well meaning policies that go in effect. Like The Affordable Care Act for example. There was a provision I believe in if the employer has more than 50 employees all full timers are required health insurance. While that sounds real good n theory companies adapt. I got laid off from a small company and work got shuffled around. Savvy companies and or corporations know who to get around stuff like this.
TEANUS 16,218
Uh oh the “let’s eliminate tipping culture completely” police are here. Server/bartender here of course - GOOD LUCK getting most servers or bartenders to continue dealing with the public for less than like $20/hour. Hell I probably wouldn’t even do it for $20 flat. Then people will say “no one wants to work” or “why are my food prices so high?”. I get that it works in other countries cause it’s been set up that way for a long time….but in the US at least it’s simply not rational because of the already existing small profit margins for small restaurants with increasing labor and supply costs. If you expect restaurants to pay their servers over minimum wage all of a sudden they’re simply gonna close their dining rooms or have to shut their doors all together British social ladies with upturned pinkies, glasses clinking // xoxoTEANUS
