It's a reason more parties than the primary 2 unfortunately have little chance at election the way things are now. If you aren't connected to a large established body like the DNC ready to ride for you already, it's a huge workload to fund an election campaign enough to get off the ground all across the country.

Ad buys and staff, mostly. Campaigns hire thousands of people, especially in battle ground states, to run strong ground games. Those people need to be compensated for their work.

Yes, could be a complete waste, but afaik the donations cannot be simply like.. "income" for a candidate if they choose to drop out, I think all the funds must be used on campaigning (but some loopholes exist).
