Edward Sheeran doesn’t believe artists who say they don’t care about chart success

“I don’t believe any artist that says they don’t, otherwise you wouldn’t release music because you’d be like, ‘If I don’t care what people think, then why would I even put it out?’ You’d just sort of make the music and be like, ‘Well that’s made me feel good.’ All artists, we want to be loved. That’s why we are on stage. And that’s why you sign to a record company to go, ‘I would like people to hear the music that I’m making.’ I don’t really subscribe to this whole, like, not caring thing… that’s all a kind of ruse of cause it sounds cool to say but every artist wants people to like their music… It really pisses me off when people are like, ‘Oh I don’t care how it does.’ I’m like, ‘F**king shut up! You do! Everyone does.’ […] Anyone in the pop game definitely cares.”

There is a difference between wanting your music to do well and caring about charts me thinks.

Like, I'm sure if Gaga's new single debuts at number 1 she'll be happy but so will she even if it doesn't.

I don't think wanting ppl to recognize your work equals chart success.

Like if we are talking about pop music, yeah sure. But I don't think, for example, ppl who upload 6-hour long pieces on bandcamp really care that much.

You can have a strong, genuine audience without having hits. Look at all the one-hit-wonders who fell into oblivion afterwards.

Well of course the king of NPC music would say this. His perspective of music is solely about money; making safe, vapid songs that cater to the lowest common denominator in order to maximise reachability and commercial success. Nearly 20% of UK newly weds chose Perfect as their first dance song at their weddings the first year of its release.

Philistine.

Of course artists want their music to do well and to make a living off it, but that should be second place to the passion of the artist and their music itself. True artists would risk not making commercially friendly music if that was the music they loved to make.

There’s a fine line between making music that resonates with people and music that is manufactured for chart success.
Every artist wants the former. The second it starts becoming a numbers game, you can smell the desperation and it’s a turn-off for me. Produce music that speaks to you and where you’re at right now. If it’s authentic, there’s a good chance it will resonate with others.

I think charts nowadays are really just for promo and a fake prestige cause you can get a #1 without having a true impact on the industry and culture. It’s more like an artifice that artists and labels have to use fans to strive for and fight for an objective without a real importance cause in the end of the day, for the label, if an album or a song made money enough to pay for itself it doesn’t really matter where it charted 🤷🏻‍♂️

If you see me posting like crazy, I'm either bored or procrastinating.

His takes are so shallow and never delve deeper than his shallow mind

of course artists care about charts at the end of their day. But someone like Gaga definitely cares about her message more than the success of her song (we’ve seen proof of this countless times)

I mean what a stupid combination he's tried.
Example:
Do I think Allie X cares about chart success? Absolutely not, she has her writing career for that if she wants but her solo material has always been her doing something she enjoys.
Do I think Allie X cares about how her fans react to her music? Absolutely.

Do I think Ed Sheeran cries if he sticks at #2? Yes. I also think he cries when he climaxes. Because he's a little bitch.
