We're acting like he's a private citizen that had a silly opinion when in actuality he perpetuated a lot of the hate that has just been recently reversed. So he caused a huge chunk of the issue, gay people got killed because of it, gay people fought for themselves and turned public opinion, and then he said "oh yes, gay pride! Basic human rights!" after the fact.
