The Reason Gaga used the OK Symbol Over Eye

In her latest instagram post promoting the Chromatica Ball Film, there’s a picture from her performing in the first chapter/act of the show holding up both of her hands over her eyes in the OK symbol. Nothing new, as she did this during 2009-2010 especially when singing Poker Face. 

I was reminded of this trend that she was hugely prominent in influencing, and started thinking about why she did it? In America at the time, the majority of Christians were freaking out that it was satanic, as it looks like a 666 over one’s eye. So when trying to find a reason for why she was doing this, the explanation was that she was basically an emissary of Satan. 

So I had to dig a little deeper..!

I looked through histories from sign language and found that the symbol stems from a lot of different religions, and means wildly different things in various regions of the world. In the Americas and some parts of Europe, it is widely understood as “OK” or “good”. 
I found what seems to be the earliest depiction of it in modern pop culture from a 1960’s show called “The Prisoners”, where a community of people is trapped in a seemingly normal town, though under complete surveillance at all times. The community will use the OK symbol over their eyes when greeting each other and using the phrase “be seeing you,” as a reminder that while everything is “ok” (pretty town, seems mostly normal, etc)., they are always under watch, as the eye below the hand sees through it.

The Fame and The Fame Monster are obviously brilliant works of art and still hold incredible tracks to this day. But both are almost parodies of what traditional “fame” is. The Fame being an exaggerated and theatrical depiction of the blonde bombshell and party-life, and The Fame Monster being the dark side of fame: anxiety, grief, fear, isolation, etc. 

Gaga used this symbol for the first time in the Poker Face music video, and continues to do it while performing the song now. My theory is that this is a reference to The Prisoners, and is, like her debut album(s), a mockery of being watched by a bigger force. In Poker Face, she sings “he can’t read my poker face.” That she was so good at hiding her true bisexuality in bed that nobody could tell she was fantasizing with women. That unlike the characters in The Prisoners, she could be watched per se, but not entirely seen. On a greater scale, I think she used this idea from The Prisoners as a mockery of American fame and the paparazzi, emphasizing the themes of fame being a bad thing and constantly being under scrutiny from the general public.  Furthermore, as she does this and sings Poker Face at the Chromatica Ball, it is during the act of the show in which she is confined by fame (literally the geometrical dress she’s caged into while singing Bad Romance). 

I’d never really thought of this before, and it was really easy to see how quickly it all unfolded when I started to find an answer. But genuinely, she is so creative and artistic in the most subtle ways - such as this, I genuinely believe she is the greatest artist of all time.
