calmar 22,798 Posted May 11, 2024 Author Share Posted May 11, 2024 Finally saw it! Like a lot of folks here I'm in suburbia so there's a lot of light pollution. Also, phones/cameras pick it up better than the eyes; so while I've been getting photos, it took until about 10 minutes ago for me to see and experience anything. Very very faint, fainter than I thought. Not the majestic nature documentary stuff. Easily confusable with clouds, but they move in and out and have distinct shapes in the sky. Curves and streaks. The sky is also tinged a little bit of a strange color. I'm hoping it intensifies throughout the evening. I’ve been talking and dreaming about specifically traveling way more north to be able to see. I can’t believe this. I never imagined it would happen to be visible here, especially with so much light pollution from nyc and tonight it was CRAZY cloud coverage. I had gone out around 2 AM, waited and about an hour and a half later I saw! This is truly a dream come true. It wasn’t visible by naked eye for me, but as soon as I took photos, you could see wow I’m genuinely shook. calmar 22,798 Posted May 11, 2024 Author Share Posted May 11, 2024 Yeah what you could see with the eyes was barely anything, though the more you took photos and stuff the more your eye kinda knew what to look for. I could start telling apart the aurora bands from clouds etc after about an hour. Still wish to see the giant curtain auroras in clear skies, but now that I know the difference between what's recorded and what's real, I'm not sure I want to take a trip to brave the cold and stand around and only glimpse what I saw this evening Just took my last pic (it's almost 6am on the east coast of North America, so the sun has started to rise) and you can tell things are still happening up there but they'll go invisible in the sunlight. Supposedly there's a chance of the aurora continuing tonight for the Europeans/Americans amongst us but who knows if it'll be as good as tonight was.
