calmar 22,798
Various international weather organizations, such as the United States' National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), have issued notices that a series of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have occurred from a sunspot cluster on the sun roughly 17 times the size of the Earth. As a result, the Earth is currently (May 10th, May 11th) in range of these ejecta, with strong aurorae visible much farther from their normal ranges than is usually possible. Critical electromagnetic infrastructure operators have been notified, with possible impacts to power grids, spacecraft, radio transmissions, and low-Earth satellites, among other technologies. The current series of CMEs is the strongest to have hit the Earth since 2005, the last time the NOAA issued the current G4 (severe geomagnetic storm) warning. The highest NOAA warning ranking, a 5 (Extreme), occurred in 2003, when an electromagnetic storm caused power outages in Sweden and damaged transformers in South Africa. For members in North America, the strongest display of aurorae, which are projected to travel as far south as the american states of Alabama and California and have a chance to be visible in every state except for Hawai'i, are to occur between 2am and 5am EST on 11 May (starting in 4 hours). There are already images coming in from witnesses to the event in Europe, notably throughout the length of the island of Great Britain, as the night passes by there. The aurora is to be visible also from the southern hemisphere, although due to the time zone differences, Australia might miss out, and New Zealanders may be able to catch some glimpse after sunset tonight, 11 May.
