wow this is completely surreal, i thought this only happened in movies, imagine experiencing Final Destination kind of stuff but in real life and in even worse conditions.

I dont quite understand the cargo ship causing it tho? as i see it was just passing below, how it affected it? why the power went out? was it crashing with the bridge or what? thats insane, im confused

It lost propulsion and started to drift, hitting one of the support beams.

Other implications this may cause on the livelihood of the people around that area will be sorrounding commerce:

- The harbor's blocked.
- They're not going to get any more new car deliveries at this time.
- Amazon is just on the other side of the river, meaning, forget the same-day, next-day delivery packages.
- The beltway is going to be a parking lot. The tunnels are going to be over-jammed

Commerce matters. When commerce stops, the entire city suffers. It's bad enough that people have died. That is horrible. But businesses and their employees are going to take huge hits that they may not recover from. Severe economic repercussions like losing jobs, homes & health. Given how many families are financially on-the-edge, this could be devastating to some.

Yeah as a person who lives around here the harbor tunnels are a nightmare as is. Every time I've used them it's been stand still traffic. This is going to make it a 1000x worse.

Omg I was scared that people were gonna be stuck on an island or something so I looked it up and thankfully it seems like there's a way around the bridge, it just takes way longer. so hopefully people can still go to work, just need to leave much earlier..

The topic title is kinda misleading.

The title as it is right now implies that the bridge suddenly collapsed on its own.

But this is not the full story.

A ship collided with the bridge and the container ship destroyed the bridge. It then collapsed as a result of the collision.

It should rather be "Container ship collides with bridge".

There is no reason to be scared driving over a bridge. As you can see, the bridge did not collapse on its own, it collapsed because it was destroyed by an external force. If you stand on a road, and another car hits you, one would not blame the road, one would blame the other car.

The World Trade Center also did not collapse on its own. It collapsed after it was attacked. So bridges remain very safe to drive over.

Over 1/3 of all bridges in the U.S. need major repair work or full replacement. There's a serious infrastructure issue here, regardless of what caused this particular incident.

As someone who has worked in One World Trade, I can confirm it is still anxiety-inducing, regardless of "safety".
