Kinda support this. Kids are extremely maleable and impressionable and easily influenced and social media can be so toxic

 

Not only is it toxic but its also filled with imacurate information that algorithims feed more and more if u access them and very young brains are not well capable of enough critical reasoning to be able to tell falsehood. If some adults already struggle with that imagine kids?

 

I think 13 or 14 is a reasonable age. Even at 14 u can be extremely prone to being brainwashed to stupid when fed propaganda or bad influences but its also not realistic to deny this freedom for too long so i dont think u can go much above 14 tbh

There's literally a SCOTUS case open deciding whether or not laws like this do violate the first amendment and federal judges in red states across the country are saying they absolutely do.

They force tech companies to moderate users' age, requiring legal verification like an ID, forcing certain language into their TOS, and violating users' privacy.

It's 100% unconstitutional.

How else are u supposed to verify age tho?

 

When u lie and click ur over 18 to whatch p*rn if your not thats technically illegal also. And u could argue its illegal that they dont bother to make any kind of effort to verify like if a bartender just took your word for it that u were of age to drink

How would that even work? Can’t they just put whatever age when signing up?  It says the current minimum age is 13, but there are definitely kids younger than that with social media pages so it obviously doesn’t make a difference.

Honestly, as a teacher who has to deal with the severe depression and anxiety of my students and cyberbullying, I have been thinking this for a while. The internet is a dangerous place. Why do we allow everyone on it? I wouldn’t mind there being  something like a drivers license for social media or the internet in general when you’re 16 or something.

Same goes for social media.

Sorry, nothing anyone says here will convince me this is remotely a good idea. I grew up in Florida and the connections I was able to form online were my lifeline so many times when I was young

Now this state is demonstrably worse for gay kids than it was when I was young and in school.

Sure, but bans and age limits are rarely the way to go imo

Like I said before, teach kids moderation and how to think critically. Don't remove the most valuable resource humanity's ever created from their lives.

Well agree to disagree that thats what social media is cuz thats not how id classify it

 

Even now as an adult, id kill to spend more time socially face to face but social media in part makes ppl lazy too

That's why we teach people to use it responsibly

Having the entirety of human knowledge at your fingertips and being able to speak to anybody anywhere in the world at any time is easily the greatest thing humanity has ever produced, even if it's just being used as entertainment or escapism by a kid.

Too much optimism in my opinion. I dont think its realistic to expect that 9 or 10 years old kids are gonna be taught to think critically well enough to be able to resist propaganda or toxic behaviour. Their brains are too impressionable and government and society is also never gonna bother to put in the work to teach kids otherwise

 

That being said i get ur points. There would be major cons as well.
