*Republicans are the only ones saying that to stoke fear in their base to get them to vote against Biden

Republicans definitely fear monger about it the most, but they are definitely *not* the only people saying it

When it comes to lying about crime statistics and saying crime is at an all time high to stoke fear that is what I am referring to. That is exclusive to Republicans

The rhetoric surrounding crime in the US is nuts. Crime levels are lower than theyโ€™ve been in the better part of the past 20-30 years, yet folks are acting like weโ€™re living in Gotham City lmaoย

Im willing to bet the normal standard now to not get physical with a robber may play into this at least a little bit. Ur supposed to give them whatever if ur robbed even in a business and not try to intervene physically. I feel like decades ago theyd be much more likely to try to stop them and result in escalation

ย

Would roberies that dont result in physical altercations be considered a "violent crime"?

Thats not an anecdote. Its been a big issue in a lot of countries that car thefts have risen considerably. Just in my city for example

ย

ย

Certainly the case here in Canada especially in Quebec. Unless the US has not been a part of that trend

ย

Thing with measuring crime is theres all kinds of categories you can cherry pick to say its worse or better.ย

ย

But the car thing isnt anecdotal at least not in a lot of countries

The FBI stats state that all crime went down, so thatโ€™s kind of a moot point.

What they were referring to was, by definition, an anecdote. And, again, it should be obvious that some areas struggle with high car theft rates and not others, but whatโ€™s the point of making an FBI analysis about whatโ€™s happening in Quebec?ย

Car thefts and petty theft have always been a thing and were an even bigger thing in the 90s as I recall when I was a kid.ย
ย

The only difference today is that we have a whole generation of TikTok Karens and bomb shelter bros who exaggerate it online for engagement.ย
ย

Now, if we want to talk about the state of cities like San Francisco and Oakland, thatโ€™s a different story. The homelessness that afflicts the Bay Area has been caused by variety of factors from income inequality, inadequate mental health services, and ultra high cost of living, which hit the Bay Area first due to the tech bubble, and a housing shortage that originates all the way back to the recession. Good olโ€™ American capitalism.ย

Its not just Quebec. My point was its been a general trend lately in a lot of places unless the US isnt part of the trend.

ย

Edit: So it seems in the US theres only been a modest uptick overall in recent years but still lower than decades ago

This this this this THIS

My grandma swears up and down that "the world's gone crazy today, nowhere is safe" and no! Lmao. The world today is demonstrably safer than it's been in decades. Probably more than a century.

Turn off the 24 hour news cycles and actually go out into the world.

The post I replied to said they didn't buy overall crime being down because of the car theft *in their city*

That is, by definition, absolutely anecdotal.ย

Also, car thefts being up doesn't mean crime in general can't be going down. No shade but I'm really not understanding your point.ย

The rates of car theft in the US between 2010-2022 are the lowest theyโ€™ve been in the past 20-30 years and have only seen a small surge relative to an otherwise historic low (which is consistent with overall crime rates surging around the onset of the pandemic)ย
