I must say I used to really dig Sam’s earlier work, I’ve not been to keen on their recent music and that’s not because of them now, I just don’t like the music. I used to stream the hell out their music with Disclosure (latch, together, omen).. the latest tracks with Calvin Harris were bops actually, I liked those.

The main thing is that Sam has become comfortable in their own skin and is living their life how they want, and I think that’s more important than ever.

Check out my new single 'Loon' - https://open.spotify.com/track/7q1GGm2mBlC9hPWige0C6e?si=6b5319d0e3b44fa6

It’s one thing to dislike Sam’s music/artistic vision, but I’ve noticed that a lot of hate Same come after releasing something provocative. I think a lot of people here just do not like seeing bigger people- let alone bigger nonbinary people- express their sexuality.

“it’s not about trans/fat phobia, it’s about the music!” Yet one of the main criticisms towards Sam is related to the way they present their vision.

idk, it does feel icky

My thoughts about Gloria notwithstanding, is Sam no longer non-binary? Seeing a lot of “he/him” in this thread and wondering if things changed.

Think it just comes down to a lot of the Sam haters being haters.

To my knowledge they remain a they

Even if I wrote an essay about how much I dislike who they are as a person, that doesn't mean I dislike them because they're non-binary.

I can find your attitude repulsive, your character weak, your morals questionable, your virtue lacking, your humour tasteless, your opinions thoughtless, your emotional intelligence underdeveloped, your empathy convoluted, your integrity compromised, your awareness deficient and your humility wanting, without believing you don't deserve to identify as non-binary.

There's more to Sam than being non-binary. You are reducing them to nothing more than a label.

I can criticize their personality freely the same I do with every other artist.

"Approve and applaud their artistry or you're transphobic!" is a revolting thing to say.

As a non-binary person, this hits nerve.

I'm not reducing Sam to their identity, and to say I'm doing so is honestly offensive. I'm not asking you to applaud their artistry, but the constant mocking and revolt over their appearance and exxxtra behavior IS rooted in transphobia. Gays and girls don't mock and critique girls for being extra, yet they do Sam. It's all over this site, and every Sam topic.

As an NB, I'm constantly asked about my nails "how can you wipe your ass?" My clothes, my hair, my position in the bedroom, etc. Do you realize how demeaning and dehumanizing that is? We are constantly picked apart for our appearance and our presentation to the world.

And as you double down on your attempt to critique Sam, you're adding fuel to the fire of invalidating gender expression. All of you need to do better and think before you type.

Mister G

You know Gloria was one of those albums that just didn't do anything for me, but I still applaud Sam for their hustle (not sure why people on here keep misgendering Sam when it's been stated numerous times Sam's pronouns are they/them).

Well, something provocative does just that... it provokes, and the response it gets it not always positive

In their latest era, there was such a try-hard vibe to be ~shocking~ or as you even said- provocative, and that to me is very different than someone organically expressing their natural self. Folks can see from a mile away when someone is primarily doing something for attention.

Anyone directing hate or mockery towards you or Sam deserves to be called out for their bigotry, held accountable and thoroughly educated.

As metioned, I personally dislike Sam's music for reasons entirely attributed to taste. I didn't enjoy their debut album (that was before they came out) and have opinions about their vocal ability.

But I think I see where we got our wires crossed. As a non-binary individual, your relationship with Sam's art stems from a very intimate place. You probably have a better understanding of their work and message than any of us here. Because of that, it's difficult to separate their artistry from their gender expression, as they appear one & the same.

So when someone comes along and criticises Sam's music, I can see why you feel like it's an attack on their gender identity, also.

I can't speak for anyone else here, but as a cisgender male, I am pretty oblivious to Sam's gender identity. It isn't a part of my experience, so I don't relate to it or give it much thought. I only see the artist and their work.

I want you to know that I accept you for who you are. You don't deserve any of those horrible questions you mentioned receiving and you are entitled to peace and happiness. When something isn't part of our experience, we tend to ignore it.

To prove my honest intentions to you and as a gesture of goodwill, I will hold my hands up and admit to the fact that, despite my opinions regarding Sam's discography, this video is undeniably iconic:

I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

This is the same exact thing people said about Gaga and Madonna. But because they’re skinny cisgendered women, people defend them lol

I mean, there are people defending Sam too, just look through this thread. And um, skinny cisgendered women get eaten alive by the media all the time, so I don't think that automatically gives them a pass to universal public acclaim.
