RAMROD 104,087
Kate Winslet's just found out about Ozempic, and let's just say she's not exactly jumping for joy about it -- making her thoughts known while munchin' on a pastry. The actress stumbled upon the whole Ozempic thing while speaking to The New York Times Magazine ... where she explained she's heard murmurings about "some pill that people are taking or something like that" ... but she didn't exactly know what it was. As a result, Kate was apparently horrified when she found out what it's actually been used for ... with the star adding it sounded "terrible," and encouraging people to just eat more food instead. Kate's disgust at the whole sneaky weight loss method makes total sense when you consider the public scrutiny she's faced about her body ... especially since her Titanic days back in '97. She told the publication the historical comments about her weight got to the point where she began battling an eating disorder ... but she kept it to herself at the time. Heartbreakingly, Kate shared that when she did lose weight, people would comment on how good she looked, reinforcing this idea that looking good was directly tied to how much she weighed. Nowadays, when people try to comment on Kate's weight, she's not having any of it ... quick to call them out on it right then and there. Safe to say, Kate's been through the wringer on this issue ... so her feelings on Ozempic aren't all that surprising. Something to note here ... Ozempic, originally a type 2 diabetes drug, is used off-label in KW's native Britain, but it's not exactly all the rage there like it is here in the States. https://amp.tmz.com/2024/03/05/kate-winslet-ozempic-terrible-weight-loss/ https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/03/magazine/kate-winslet-the-regime.html
Nutella 3,959
As a type 1 diabetic, I have mixed feelings. I want people to look/feel good, but I think perspective is often lost in matters like these. And the supply of this medication, like all others, is finite.
Bling 31,039
I think people are getting a little too divisive on this. If people want to take it for weight loss, let them. Some have a really hard time losing weight. https://discord.gg/hausofdelulu

I mean that would be fine if the people who rely on it to manage their diabetes weren't having to ration it due to short supply. 9

Not to attack you personally, but this whole argument about people with diabetes not being able to access the drug is irrelevant. There are over 20 different medications that people with type 2 diabetics can take to help manage their blood sugar in addition to lifestyle modifications, which can completely reverse the disease state in some people. Ozempic is relatively new to the market (since 2018) and is traditionally a 3rd or 4th line medication mainly due to its high price tag. So unless your private insurance or government covers it, you won't be able to use it unless you can afford it, even if you do have type 2 diabetes. The main advantage of using Ozempic over the other medications is the associated weight loss and heart benefits, which are not seen with the other medications. I think it's important that people understand that people with diabetes are not suffering because this drug is in short supply, especially as this medication is not accessible to most. 1

I don't consider what you said an attack at all so no worries! That said, I don't think what you said is true. There are diabetic people suffering because of it, either because other medications didn't work as well for them or had bad side effects, or because their insurance actually covers ozempic but not other medicines. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/ozempic-shortage-ontario-diabetes-patients-weight-loss-1.7027115 https://www.cbc.ca/news/indigenous/ozempic-shortages-first-nations-1.7041324 (Sorry for the canadian sources but I'm in Canada so they come up more prominently in web searches) Also like people who use ozempic to lose 10 - 20 pounds can also do that easily and accessibly through other avenues, especially if they have the money to splurge on ozempic in the first place. And no worries, I'm proudly Canadian as well haha. I guess the situation is different in my province where the government will not cover Ozempic as promptly as other health insurance plans from other provinces! Nutella 3,959
Just now, BlingNotTheMusic said: Then we should blame Big Pharma, not people who are trying to avoid diabetes and being overweight by taking advantage of a drug that is offered to them and completely legal. Just covering my own bases here: I think Ozempic is a valid and worthwhile means of keeping people healthy/self-confident, and I feel no resentment toward those who use the drug. Because you're right, Big Pharma is always to blame. Never vulnerable people.

Ppl can also have some personal responsibility and not make life needlessly harder for others for superficial reasons but yes by no means are pharmaceutical companies off the hook either
