It’s actually really commonly carried in the wild tbh. Never was truly eradicated! Numbers just settled back to where they should be in the first place. There’s a reason you don’t touch wild mice or rats. Depleted number of cats to control mice and rat populations is theorized to have been why it took hold. Most of Western Europe at the time had demonized them and would regularly kill them believing them to be evil. Then add the fact that we just have better sanitation systems in place and antibiotics for the the few cases that do cross over to humans. It’s pretty quickly contained.
