I don’t see her letting go of her writing in any case, I think it’s one of her favorite creative stages. I would love to see more co-writings with Hillary Lindsey in the future though

All that Plastic Doll discourse on those last few pages.

I'm bored so let me share my unpopular opinion :

This song would not be as panned as it is if its production was good... looking at you Skrillex.

I don't mind the lyrics being basic, and I quite like the melody of Plastic Doll's chorus. What bogs it down for me is the incredibly generic and mediocre production that does not compliment anything. The production being so whatever is what makes all of us zero in on lyrics that don't have the meat to be dissected. (I don't see people dissecting Just Dance's lyrics for example... you get the idea)

I am a vocal Chromatica critic (it was a pandemic album, it filled a void, whatever)

& I believe Plastic Doll is ham-handed/dumb…

but the chorus is one of the few moments on that album that actually makes me want to dance

(something I hope for from ALL music, call me crazy).

Asking the Plastic Doll haters:

can you actually remain motionless during the chorus?

If so, TRY dancing to it like an inebriated sl*t, it IS fun🕺🏼

(if only the lyrics/subject matter had been different)

A forgettable bop, but a bop nonetheless.

I agree tbf. I've never minded Plastic Doll that much and never skip it.

While I defo think the production is generic and bland (like most of the songs on the album), I've always liked that shuddering snapping beat pattern. It is a welcome change from the relentless repetitive house beats that swamp the album. The doll metaphor is fine but the lyrics could definitely have been cleverer and more sophisticated, and the melody of the chorus and bridge could have been more adventurous and climatic.

I think the song is screaming out for a touch of SOPHIE's rich, intricate, rubbery hyperpop designs. More textures, more shimmering synths, more imagination and edge. 

But that's my criticism for most of the album. It's a good album, but just a bit flat and bland, and imo a bit of a BloodPop vanity project. He should've set the likes of SOPHIE and Arca loose onto the thing and just curated it from a far.

Ye like Gaga did say that she was going through a really bad depression at the time and didn't want to make music and it was BloodPop that helped talk her into making an album. And unfortunately you can hear and feel that reluctancy and lack of interest throughout the album imo. It definitely lacks that Gaga passion and perfectionism in places, like Plastic Doll and Free Woman etc. 

I once read a critique that said "Gaga sounds bored on this album" and they aren't wrong imo.

 

That's the main reason why I'm so excited for LG7, cuz she said how inspired she is this time and so happy to make music again, ("the best music I've made in as long as I can remember"), so I'm definitely expecting the quality of this album to be way better.

I hate singling out producers, but looking at his discography,

Stefani must have been in a REALLY dark place to climb into bed with him.

I can't even THINK about those mid-10s Bieber songs without twitching

Revolting stage name & tacky/stale producing instincts aside,
