TaylorSwift 162,669
The Las Vegas felon who attacked a judge in a violent outburst in court last week has been charged with her attempted murder. Deobra Redden, 30, was in court to be sentenced for a felony battery charge last Wednesday when he leaped over the defence table and the judge’s bench and landed on top of District Judge Mary Kay Holthus. A criminal complaint has now revealed that Redden has been hit with new charges of attempted murder over the incident. He also faces counts of battery on a protected person, extortion and intimidating a public officer, among other charges. The judge sustained minor injuries, but she was back at work the following day. On Monday, Deobra Redden appeared in front of Judge Holtus once again – this time shackled and closely watched – to resume his sentencing for the original case of battery. He was given 19 months to four years in prison. source https://store.taylorswift.com

PartySick 172,975
Really sad tbh. It sounds like he was born addicted to drugs that his mother used when she was pregnant which threw off his entire mental and emotional state, making him quick to anger and irrational behavior. Had the US built some form of true mental health care and focused on rehabilitation rather than "lock 'em up, leave 'em to rot" this dude might have actually had a chance at life. Economy 52,902
I do think equating an outburst of the moment to outright attempted murder is lowkey slightly harsh. Also was that even his intent or did he just wanna beat her up? Im not defending what he did or excusing it though. But im just saying a sudden outburst of someone who is potentially mentally unstable shouldnt be put on the same level of someone attempting a murder. Especially pre-medited but i dunno what distinctions his state makes on that Also why is no one talking rehabilitation? Have to agree with @PartySick Ppl with severe and abnormal violent outbursts have that for a reason. Punishment never solves those reasons, we should put more emphasis as a society to go to the root cause of criminal behaviour to prevent future infractions rather than just punish and deteriorate their mental and emotional state further Im not saying dont punish at all though. This is too serious to let go entirely and not serve any jail time at all. But im also saying balance the emphasis of that also with help and rehabilitation. I dont think 10 years in jail is the way to go Jail can serve a purpose to help protect society from dangerous ppl. But i also feel its become the default punishment for anything of more significance out of laziness because locking ppl up doesnt take any effort. Trying to actually fix people would require more thinking, more structure and more creativity and so far as a society we havent been bothered to do so Also if someone is genuinely dangerous and jail time is required, the rehabilitation portion should be emphasized to still happen while serving time. Therapy sessions, education, stuff to give them purpose etc can happen while in jail. A couple extra hours outside ur cell per day doesnt make jail not a punishment and frankly the reduced mental health strain on these inmates can only set them better up for success

Emvee 8,845
Mental health is a serious issue that republicans only use as a tool to deflect away from gun control. A reminder that we don’t have mental institutions because of Reagan because, again, those goons only care about undermining state institutions to fill the pockets of their rich donors through tax breaks and subsidies. Mental health is an extreme drag on our healthcare system because people with mental illness are sent to hospitals where professionals are not trained to deal with mental health OR they are sent to prison when it’s too late and they’ve done something irreparable. I’m so sick of seeing how people are talking about throwing him away. This man needs serious mental help and this system is set up to keep people like him in a constant cycle of going in and out of prison. Our country has completely failed us time and time again when it comes to mental health treatment.
