Also I think music is subtle and if you are musician you know gaga always brings her touch and ears to the table and never ever sounded like something generic.

you want something experimental but you always fail to see the genius and experimental in the little things. Like/// I think even Joanne is experimental in some ways.

People mocking Gaga for taking her approach to acting seriously in this thread are annoying. The "she's so CrAzY and ExTrA" schtick is dismissive of her dedication, and (at times) rooted in misogyny. Are we calling a woman crazy when she dares to take her approach to art seriously in 2024? It's like she is being gaslit by her so-called fans who invalidate her knowledge and training by calling it extra over and over again.

I wonder if any of you have poured 100% of yourselves into a passion, or put any real effort into a craft in your lives. Is caring deeply about being creative and taking a process seriously too 'cringe' for you?

A lot of things that Gaga gets harped on about being so CrAzY and ExTrA are normal things that actors do. She was taught the Strasberg method, which uses memories from the actor's personal life to connect to a character. She doesn't act that way because she's quirky, it is what she was trained to do. Choosing animals to inform a character is a standard acting exercise. Many actors use it, you guys are being ignorant.

Marlon Brando studied apes for Streetcar Named Desire, Jake Gyllenhaal studied coyotes for Nightcrawler, and Anthony Hopkins used various animals like tarantulas and crocodiles for Silence of the Lambs. But I guess they are allowed to be taken seriously while a pop-girlie like Gaga isn't allowed to be seen as legitimate at acting. You are her fans aren't you supposed to be supporting her not adding to undermining her?

Ok but find me one interview of those actors that is as unhinged as a HOG interview :icant:

I like that Gaga prepared as much as she did. But she seemed strangely unstable as she forcibly repeated, often for minutes on end and completely unasked, everything to do with her method, over and over. It became a string of memes for a reason.

Rather than undermining her, at least in my post I expressed concern about whether or not taking these roles so utterly seriously on a psychological level is healthy for her. She even straight up admits that what she does might not be healthy. I am only asking if the roles she specifically chooses are worth that amount of effort. She's not in a Lars von Trier film.

There are 100s of colorful quotes from actors on press tours that match or even outdo the Gucci energy. Zoe Kravitz said she drank milk from a bowl like a cat when playing Catwoman. Leonardo Dicaprio pretended to sleep in animal carcasses and ate raw meat during The Revenant. Halle Berry visited a crack den and didn't bathe for over a week for Jungle Fever. Joaquin Phoenix did an extreme diet for Joker and commented that it was like developing a disorder, etcetera. If anything what Gaga has said is much more TAME. People just look for excuses to make fun of her.

It is valid to worry about her health and I am with you on that. I often get the vibe from Gaga that she might feel like she has to emphasize how much she prepares because she wants to prove her legitimacy in acting considering that she started as a pop star. I dislike calling her "unstable" for that. That implies that she is crazy and is undermining language.

The films she has been in are not like Lars von Trier films (thank god), but they do deal with some challenging material. ASIB must have felt very personal with the addiction and mental illness themes, and Gucci dealt with adultery, male-dominated industry, and committing murder (less personal, but a dark head-space to sit in).

Gaga has always treated her club-bangers as serious art, why wouldn't she treat acting roles the same way? Gaga's philosophy is to treat 'superficial' pop art with the same validity as high art. One of my favorite quotes from her is, "Pop culture will never be low-brow". Might not be to your taste and that is fine. Sorry for the essay!

THANK YOU! Some people just get mad because they’re jealous because they’re not able to live a passionate life:traumatica:

(not bathing for a week is nothing though, I think we’ve all done worse at some point… at least I did for 4 months years ago:ladyhaha:)

Well said tbh :koons:

Impressive arguments. I guess I still have trouble thinking of her as an actual actress, possibly because, as you say, she strives so hard to prove her legitimacy as a seeming outsider. Imo she would appear wayy more professional and like she belongs if she played it way more cool.

I get that the response to that is "but she has always been extra!" but I actually don't agree with that at all. Most of her interviews have very cool, chill, relaxed yet deep and confident energy. Her The Fame interviews are breathtaking in that regard, esp as a debut artist. There was no question that she was grounded and an absolute professional, even intimidating, despite some of the outlandish words that came out of her mouth.

Her energy of the last few years is very different, to me at least. Probably a me problem.

ANYWAY. Great essay, thanks for responding to me :applause:
