Why is ‘The Edge of Glory’ aging poorly?

LMAO since when has the streaming stats of a 12-year old song ever indicated quality? Tracks like Government Hooker and Bloody Mary had viral trends associated with them. If TEOG gets one, I guarantee the song's streams will grow significantly.

I don’t think its a coincidence that the edgier songs on the album are getting more recognition - they were extremely ahead of their times and people are starting to appreciate them more now. TEOG, albeit a masterpiece, it a bit more on the generic side.

i think its doing fine on spotify - 280m and 100,000 daily streams

In comparison britney's TTWE has 164m and averages 45,000 streams a day, and that also peaked at #3 in 2011

Just A Holy Fool

This makes me feel kind of vindicated. I never was much of a fan… and all the songs off BTW that are out performing it slay!

Too long, no tiktok moment, last on the albums tracklist…

For one, it's overwhelmingly too long by today's standards.

People when a song is 5 minutes and not 1 minute and 30 seconds:

I blame y'all for the fact that half the songs on Chromatica are snippet length :grr:

This made me do the math and realize that the Mary Jane Holland snippet that we got on Radio ARTPOP 2 weeks before the album’s release is less than 30 seconds shy of Sour Candy and Babylon in full :billie:

I KNOW :crossed:

When a song is good you don't mind it hanging around and listening to songs that are under 3 minutes, to me at least, always feels like sitting down for a movie just to see the credits in half an hour.

I swear I will always be mad that Alice is half a verse, a bridge, and barely a chorus to be had. So mad that I made my own version and spliced Electric Chapel in as a second verse :crossed: Half the songs don't even have choruses, just dance breaks. 911, Sour Candy, Babylon, etc are too damn short.

Like.

UGH.

Seriously hope Chromatica wasn't a sign of where she's taking her music :fatcat: please just let it be the final dance pop album to pander to the gays before delivering something truly amazing.

I came I here ready to fight but you're actually talking about streams? generally when people say something aged well or poorly, it's about its quality!

but tbh it's not like it's one of her signature hits... if you hear Lady Gaga it's sure as hell not the first song that comes to mind, it's no JD PF or Shallow! the other songs you mentioned all had their TikTok moment and hmh is more recent...

I really am shocked by the mixed reaction here to TEOG. I honestly consider it to be her very best song. BTW as an album has its issues but TEOG is not one of them. It’s such a definitive piece of Gaga’s history. Maybe the fans are all still butthurt about the video (which I still love to this day). The monsters back then got SO frustrated with that video.

I remember hearing the radio premiere of TEOG, after Judas “underperformed”, with a bunch of friends…and by the end we were all either dancing or crying.

Wowza. Radio premiere. I guess I’m getting old.

I need y'all to stop talking **** about Chromatica cuz it's baffling. And most songs on Chromatica have bridges and choruses so stop this nonsense NOW

I wonder about this too and why You and I also doesn't get the streams you'd expect it to (being one of her more GP-friendly hits).

I think it's the equivalent of Wide Awake or Shut Up and Drive. Like, they're big songs that everyone knows but they're not signature hits. If someone asks you, "What are Katy Perry's biggest hits?" there's probably 6-7 other songs you'd name before getting to Wide Awake. I think it's the same thing with TEOG. Everyone's heard it, but it gets overshadowed by other songs, and it hasn't transitioned very well to the current generation (hence lower streams).

It's important to point out that the mediocre music video really tarnished the song's perception at the time and it's legacy. By today's standards, the video is fine. But back when it came out it counted as a huge step down in quality and effort for an official visual from the biggest pop girl of the planet.

Yes, there was a time crunch and background issues, but she could have gone back and shot another proper video. She did not. And the damage is done.
