People are more complex than their political values and most do not identify as their political values, but vote with them in mind. But that being said, it's not as if this was an under the radar case. It made waves at its time and resonated with a lot of people, so much so that it sparked protests. I'm sure the family and friends of George Floyd also felt a sense of happiness upon learning this news. What do you have to say to them? Or are they allowed to feel that way since they personally knew the man? I think the point @Dennis is making has more to do with the rule of law and less to do with personal feelings. I think their argument, fundamentally, is that celebrating/encouraging this is a celebration of extrajudicial violence, which is largely inconsistent with progressive values (equal rights under the law, opposing retributive measures like the death penalty, indentured servitude, and state-sanctioned violence, as well supporting prison abolition and building a system of restorative justice). Ultimately, from a legal POV, how Floyd’s family (or anyone else) feels about this would have no bearing on how the justice system would respond to something like this. That point was missed on me. I did not realize his reply was directly related and extending to something previously said, since the reply quoted was just a commentary on humanity. Meruk Holland 2,444
People love vigilante justice. Otherwise why would crime fighting heroes like Batman be so popular? And enjoying something does not mean you think that thing is morally right. Nor does it mean you agree with it. Do you all remember when that one Richard Spencer guy got punched in the face? Regardless of how evil this man is, justice was served and he received his prison sentence. What's difficult about being pro-human rights is that you have to believe in them as a right even for your worst enemy. I don't believe in the death penalty, and I definitely don't believe in trying to extrajudicially take out someone's life who's already in prison. It's not a surprise that some people from the far left celebrate this news though. It's following a trend that we've been seeing recently; everything is justified for them now, violence, terrorism, stabbings, extrajudicial "murder", all in the name of a version of "justice" only they get to decide. What a dumb take - you're on a GGD forum speaking to a bunch of probably lower income working class queers with little to no political sway, not a conference of lawmakers - I'm honestly so over this kind of virtue signaling. In case you needed clarification on this, noone here is trying to make it law that criminals get stabbed Straight people don't have to put up with this garbage - they get to express all kinds of abhorrent opinions shame-free, but god forbid a queer person says anything outside of feminist/gender/queer theory. God forbid they express a frustration or anger - surely they are on a road to enact their own twisted vindictive version of justice that's gonna see innocent blood spilled everywhere. In another post you drew a parallel with ISIS - please show me an example of when progressives were throwing straight people off of buildings for being straight - I'll wait. It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke!
andreas85 400
No on should condone this. Also, the man who attacked him is a criminal himself. Vigilantism isn't acceptable in a civilized society.

I'm not gonna rehash this debate. Multiple people have made the point very eloquently in previous posts, on what it really means to be progressive. So you can read if you're interested. But I don't have to repeat myself. No one benefits from 5 pages of repeating the same point. And absolutely not sure what sexual orientation has to do with any of this. Being queer doesn't mean I have to say dumb things? Just because I'm gay doesn't mean I'm gonna abandon the progressive principles I believe in because some straight people are stupid. Notice, how I didn't come for people posting memes or whatever. I replied to a specific person who said that this action should be rewarded.

Pennywise 36,080
This thread is just bringing out more and more people for my ignore list tbh. I refuse to entertain the thoughts of center-right people masquerading as liberals (or even just liberals) anymore. Like… you are naive if you believe that we can (or even that we should) leave everything in the hands of white american justice system. I can see how this can be a slippery slope, but it is quite normal for people to celebrate vigilante justice in the face of a - usually - corrupt justice system. “Some people” in this thread are quick to blame progressives, as if literally everyone on the political spectrum does not do this same thing. Spoiler Also, can I say that it is still astounding to see this many center-right “people” on a Gaga forum? I know Gaga herself is very… liberal, but like these people aren’t even pretending to be liberals, they just support whatever right-leaning idea they possibly can. So long ggd, it was nice while it lasted.

That is exactly what the reality of justice is: it's revenge. The fact that the word "rehabilitation" is included in the discussion of justice is merely an afterthought to justify it. The only difference between personal retaliation and the justice system is an illusion of fairness, impartiality, and detachment. Ideally justice would be about morality and rehabilitation, but that simply isn't the case.

uo111 5,285
There is nothing funnier than “centrist” acting superior because “leftist” are making jokes. It’s embarrassing. People joke about a murderer being stabbed in prison? Let’s act morally superior to stroke my own ego.
