Mr S

No. Shallow was her best chance. She'd have to have a another big year, but it also has to be with something safe and melodic. Like Miley.

Also Taylor Swift hasn't even won.

"Song of the Year is awarded for a single or for one track from an album. This award goes to the songwriter who actually wrote the lyrics and/or melodies to the song. 'Song' in this context means the song as composed, not its recording. The Song of the Year award is presented to the songwriter(s) of a single song."

Β

Gaga is such a gifted songwriter and my dream is for her to win a Song Of The Year Grammy. However, I just realized it's probably not gonna happen anytime soon.

Β

I was just looking at all the previous SOTY winners and I was SHOCKED to see Taylor Swift has never won SOTY.Β  How can that be?Β  Everyone knows that Taylor's THE greatest songwriter to have ever existed. No one in history has been able to write a song as well as TayTay.Β  Elton John and Bernie Taupin who?Β  So it's mind boggling to think Tay's never won SOTY (especially knowing she's about to win Album Of The Year for a FORTH time next year). TEN studio albums over the past SEVENTEEN years, from not one of, but THE most brilliant songwriter in history, and not one of those albums has produced a song worthy of SOTY (or ROTY)? They didn't nominate Taylor for the Songwriter of the Year Grammy either?? :wtf:

Β

If Tay hasn't snagged one yet, can Gaga win SOTY? :noparty:

Objectively Taylor is a very good lyricist but is not the best, Tom Yorke, Bob Dylan, Paul MacCartney, Ben E.King and many other existed and wrote very beautiful songs too.

Then why haven't those artists ever won AOTY multiple times?

This Is America winning over Shallow is quite triumphant. It was a statement song and a cultural moment as well.

The Grammys are supposed to be based on merit. Yes, it’s all subjective, but there are very clear moments where the better album loses to the more popular album.Β

It’s a testament to the voting procedure, which has been very controversial. It’s been lamented many, many times that it needs reformed. The better album losing to the popular album isn’t the point of the award.Β

Taylor Swift winning FOUR times in a span of 16 years is very questionable. It’s impossible to agree she isΒ thatΒ talented to win 4/8 times over all of her peers.Β

Because there were other artists during their peak periods who were more attractive to the Grammy voters of that era.Β

That's literally all there is to it.Β

The Grammys and how that voting is conducted isn't rocket science and i'm not sure why stan culture thinks there's some grand conspiracy here when the reasons for why certain artists tend to win more than others are very easy to understand.Β

Let’s keep in mind, Ed won for Thinking Out Loud, which isn’t even remotely his best written song (if I was picking from X I would’ve gone with Bloodstream or Tenerife Sea, and he even has better songs from other albums and hasn’t been nominated since). Β It’s important to remember that everyone in the recording academy votes for the major awards (SOTY, ROTY, AOTY) and is then limited on the number of other genre-based categories they can vote it. Β It’s important to have a song everyone has heard. Β Even if it isn’t a β€œhit,” many songs gain traction within the academy prior to voting. Β

I'm going to but for everyone else's benefit. I know you're being sarcastic and will likely try and refute any point I make, but maybe not so let's give it a try.Β

The Recording Academy is the antithesis of the film Academy. Whereas the latter doesn't like people who oversell their desires to be nominated and win, the Recording Academy thrives on two things: loyalty and relationships. They like artists who want it. They like campaigners, they like people who make winning a Grammy out to be a big deal, they like people to get up on their stage and be excited to be holding that trophy.Β

Every single artist that wins a Grammy has this sort of relationship to the Grammys whether you see it right out in front of you or not. They campaign behind the scenes and they talk about the importance of the ceremony and they show those same feelings to the world in how they discuss their wins and what they say in their speeches. The artists who genuinely don't care and make that known are far less likely to get recognition at the ceremony unless their work is just truly undeniable in every way.Β

The RA also likes to keep artists around whom the relationship they share is beneficial. There are certain artists that are just always going to make people want to watch, and the RA will typically treat them pretty well. Despite Beyonce not winning AOTY last year for example, they essentially built the entire show around her breaking the win record.Β

Think of the Recording Academy like the head bosses at a job and the artists as employees seeking a promotion. They're going to give that promotion to the employees who fight for it, show they want it, and do things to benefit the company to get it. The bosses aren't really paying that close attention to the every day work done by these employees, but they are paying attention to what they're doing to get ahead.Β

This is why ultimately I think winning a Grammy is only as important as each individual makes it to be. To some, it's a truly important and monumental occasion. To some it's nice but ultimately meaningless. I don't think either of those perspectives are wrong. It's just a matter of how much weight someone gives playing and winning that game--and make no mistakes, the Grammys is a game.Β

That isn't to say that every artist who wins a Grammy is underserving and won only because they played the game well. I'd honestly say more often than not the person who wins is the deserving winner with some obvious exceptions. But those winners most definitely put effort into establishing a relationship and maintaining loyalty to the hands that are feeding them.Β
